Well Glamberous Ones we are a few days away from the new year and I hope you all are ready for another wacky, fashionable, bittersweet and always eventful year in pop culture!
Before we get excited for 2014 it’s about that time that we reflect on the moments in pop culture that made us shocked, laugh, swoon, and even shed some tears.
My break down of the year 2013 will highlight the topics that we couldn’t stop talking about and will never forget.
So without further adieu, let’s get into Glambergirlblog’s 2013 Pop Culture Year in Review.
The Year of Beyoncé Just when we were all complaining about Beyoncé not making any music she shocked us all, especially the music industry, with her self-titled album being released with no heads up on Friday the 13th in December, but that was just the final bang in year that belonged to Bey.
She performed the national anthem during Obama’s inauguration in January, premiered a HBO documentary and then shut down Super Bowl XLVII, literally, in February with a mini Destiny’s Child reunion. Beyoncé then took on world domination with her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour and left us with gems left and right from the Beyhive. Oh, I can’t forget to add all the super cute moments she had with hubby Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy. What else will Bey possibly do in 2014?
Amanda Bynes Loves Drake and Hates Everyone Else 2013 has been an up, down and out right weird year for Amanda Bynes. The former Nickelodeon star came on the radar when she revealed a new look of pierced cheeks and long blonde extensions. Oh and her tweets to rapper Drake about her wanting him to “murder” her vagina. Then things went from bizarre to just random! She starting attacking Rihanna and other celebs she thought was ugly on social media, she was arrested and hospitalized, then she may or may have not been recorded dancing down the street in NYC, and just like that she dropped from our radar. Well I for one want you back Miss Bynes: on TV, in film, and on my Twitter timeline. Please come back in 2014.
“Twerk Miley Twerk” Who would have thought when Miley Cyrus left her role as Disney‘s darling Hannah Montana that “twerking” and her name would go hand in hand. I mean she even got Jay Z to rap about it in his music. Thanks to Miss Cyrus “twerking” has become a household name and we’ve seen more of her this year then I think we’ve ever thought we would; where do I start?
I feel like the latter half of the year was Miley’s most jaw dropping but her shine in the spotlight started with the “twerking” unicorn onesie video she released back in March. After that she just couldn’t stop “twerking” and she did all the way to VMA’s with Robin Thicke. Miley Cyrus also had a MTV documentary released this year and broke off her engagement with Aussie, “The Hunger Games” hottie Liam Hemsworth. Now single and 21, I wonder what 2014 will have in store for Miley.
The Royal Baby and Baby Bumps Famous couples sure were busy in 2012 leading to an abundance of adorable celebrity children born this year along with announcements of pregnancies. The royal baby was one of the most anticipated births of the year and we were not disappointed when we finally saw baby George Alexander Louis! Prince William and Kate Middleton were not shy when it came to showing off their baby boy. Another bundle of joy the world couldn’t wait for was Kim Kardashian and Kanye West‘s daughter North. What a cutie she is! The baby news of 2013 kept us wondering who’s next. Kerry Washington, Kelly Clarkson, Eva Marcille, Evelyn Lozada, Emily Blunt and Olivia Wilde are just some of the mommies we will have in 2014.
Heartbreak in Hollywood: The Stars We Lost We really lost some great ones and each death in pop culture this year was something we did not see coming. Sopranos front man James Gandalfini, Glee’s Cory Monteith, Kris Kross rapper Chris Kelly, “Fast & Furious” star Paul Walker, world leader Nelson Mandela, A Different World actor Lou Myers, Law and Order’s Dennis Farina, The Famous Jett Jackson Lee Thompson Young, That 70’s Show Lisa Robin Kelly and Roger Ebert were just some of the greats we lost this year. RIP to them all.
2013 Memes and Viral Videos Now let me cheer you up a bit with some laughs we got in 2013 from the creativity of folks with photoshop and video editing. Most recently we had the viewing pleasure of James Franco and Seth Rogen spoofing Kanye West’s “Bound 2” perfectly. Other viral videos that had us talking was the crying baby listening to her mom sing, Robert Pattinson and Katy Perry doing drunk karaoke, The “Channing All Over Your Tatum” music video, Drake Starbucks hands and more! Now the memes that we enjoyed so much were “Ryan Gosling won’t eat his cereal,” Miley Cyrus twerking on things and a still of Drake from a music video appearing everywhere. What will the internet come up with in 2014?
Bittersweet: Celebrity Marriages, Engagements and Divorces I guess these things work in cycles, for every divorce we heard about an engagement or marriage was announced. Scandal actress Kerry Washington got married on the low to NFL baller Nnamdi Asomugha, Singer Ciara got engaged to rapper Future and Gabrielle Union announced her engagement to NBA baller Dwayne Wade.
Kelly Clarkson got married and so did Real Housewives of Atlanta NeNe Leakes, for the second time to the same man. In Kardashian land, Kris and Bruce Jenner separated, Khloe Kardashian filed for divorce from Lamar Odom and Kanye West popped the question to Kim Kardashian. So who else will see walking down the aisle next year? Leighton Meester, Kelly Rowland, Evelyn Lozada and Naya Rivera are all pending brides. I can’t wait to see these wedding photos.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Careers Go North We can’t talk about a year in pop culture without mentioning our favorite reality queen, or maybe just mine, Kim Kardashian! 2013 has been an awesome year for Kimmie: she welcomed her baby girl North West to the world, got her amazing body back in shape and got engaged to her best friend Kanye West. Now while Kim was slowing fading out of the spotlight, her beau Kanye was fading into it in a way we never saw him before. We know Kanye West can be pretty outspoken, you know the whole President Bush and Taylor Swift incidents, but this year his rants were on another level! Ye took to his Yeezus tour, radio/television interviews and Twitter to share his opinions to the world.
Infamous moments included West ending his brief beef with late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, asking radio personality Sway for “answers,” proclaiming Kim the most beautiful woman of all time on Hot 97 and telling a paparazzi guy to “not speak ever,” but for the new year Kanye promises to leave all that negative and angry talk behind. Do you believe him? I sure hope he has at least one rant slip for 2014.
