Relax, relate, release: Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Official Trailer Takes Viewers Back to Hillman

Just in time for Homecoming season it’s time to return to Hillman College this fall with the release of the anticipated Netflix sitcom A Different World. And yes, if you were thinking it, this will be a sequel to the beloved ’90s sitcom.

The official trailer for A Different World dropped and there has already been so many mixed feelings about this reboot. After my first watch I was scratching my head too, but after a second viewing I can possibly wrap my head about this take on the show. I was going to watch it regardless.

Season 1 of A Different World centers around Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), daughter of alums Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy) as she embarks on her time at Hillman College and begins to live her best young, gifted, Black life in and outside the classroom. Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece, Chibuikem Uche, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, Norman Nixon Jr., Vincent Jamal Hooper, Elijah J. Roberts, Renee Harrison, Famecia Ward, Dasan Frazier, Tichina Arnold, Joshua Suiter, and Raven Goodwin round out the featured cast in the 10 episode season.

What makes this version of A Different World special is the inclusion of the original cast and Debbie Allen returning as executive producer of the series. When Debbie stepped into the original show she shook it up and made it so much better – sorry season 1 lovers – so in Debbie Allen I trust. Alongside Hardison and Guy, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders, Karen Malina, Charnele Brown, Jenifer Lewis, Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, and Jada Pinkett Smith will reprise their original roles.
