Happy Oscars Sunday to those who celebrate!

The biggest night of the year for films is finally here with the 96th Academy Awards airing live at 7pm EST on ABC with host Jimmy Kimmel. As usual, there are 10 films up for the Best Picture honor at the 2024 Oscars and the nominees are “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Barbie,” “The Holdovers,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest.”

For the first time in a long time, I saw a good majority, or even heard of, the bulk of films up for Best Picture and I will say this is a strong year for contenders. Many of the films nominated are now streaming so you can watch them and see for yourself which are your favorites.

“Poor Things” is now streaming on Hulu and “Anatomy of a Fall” is slated to come on the streamer on March 22. “American Fiction” can be seen on MGM+, “Past Lives” on Paramount+, “Killers of the Flower Moon” on Apple TV+, “Barbie” on Max, “The Holdovers” and “Oppenheimer” on Peacock, and “Maestro” on Netflix. You can purchase “The Zone of Interest” on digital and you can rent it on March 12.

I tried really hard to get into “Oppenheimer” since it has been sweeping award show season this year and is expected to score big at the Oscars tonight, but I was so incredibly bored. Every popular movie isn’t for everybody and that’s ok. “American Fiction” was a film I really wanted to see out of the bunch and haven’t gotten around to viewing before Oscars night but believe it’s on my next up list. I saw “The Holdovers” and while I enjoyed it and laughed a bit it wasn’t my fav of the contenders.

“Past Lives” was a film I wasn’t expecting to love so much OR cry when watching but I did both. I was able to see “Poor Things” during the New York Film Festival and really loved Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo’s performances. Of course “Barbie” was a vibe and the others I’m not running to see, but other film lovers have vouched for them so good luck to everyone up for awards tonight.

Be sure to tune into the 96th Academy Awards tonight live at 7pm EST on ABC and join me online for commentary during the show.
