Timothée Chalamet Brings The Origins of Beloved Fictional Candy Maker in ‘Wonka’

Warner Bros. and Timothée Chalamet are preparing to take viewers into a world of pure imagination in the origin story of candy maker Willy Wonka in the upcoming “Wonka” film.

British author Roald Dahl created the character of Willy Wonka, the eccentric founder and owner of the Wonka Chocolate Factory, in the 1964 children’s novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The character appeared again in the sequel novel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator in 1972. Wonka got the live-action treatment in the 1971 film “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory” where Gene Wilder brilliantly played the title character. In 2005 Johnny Depp took on the role of the chocolate aficionado in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Now Timothée will play the young version of the character exploring his roots in candy making.

Directed by Paul King and written by King and Simon Farnaby, “Wonka” is said to be an “intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion” as the story of how the “world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker” came to be is told. Hugh Grant plays the distinctive Oompa-Loompa with Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Olivia Colman, Natasha Rothwell, Rich Fulcher, Rakhee Thakrar, Tom Davis, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith making up the ensemble cast.

I don’t know what I was expecting this trailer to give, but I didn’t get excited. I like Timothée. I enjoy him as an actor and I’ve watched a bunch of his interviews and I applaud his views on tackling his craft, but from the trailer I was getting Timmy T and not Willy. I might have to sit on this one for a minute.

“Wonka” comes to theaters this holiday season on December 15, 2023.
