Before the HBO Original drama series The Idol premiered on Sunday, June 4 there were many preconceived notions that the Sam Levinson, (creator and writer of HBO’s Euphoria) and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye created show would be deeply provocative. Starring The Weeknd as Tedros and Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, The Idol is said to be a dark twisted fairy tale about the music industry.

The premiere episode titled “Pop Tarts & Rat Tales,” under the artsy directing eye of Sam Levinson, follows Jocelyn attempting to make a comeback as the sexiest and biggest pop star following a mental collapse after losing her mother a year prior. A leaked sexually explicit photo of Jocelyn is threatening to dismantle all that as her team frantically tries to bury the story. When she meets Tedros the trajectory of her entire career shifts. Troye Sivan, Hank Azaria, Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Jane Adams, Rachel Sennott, Eli Roth, Hari Nef, and Jennie Ruby Jane make up the ensemble cast.

Despite all the negative reviews, I enjoyed the first episode of The Idol as it begins to peek into the seedy world of the music industry. Read my full review of the premiere episode of The Idol via Popternative.com HERE.

New episodes of The Idol air Sundays at 9pm EST on HBO and Max.
