In 2000 rapper Eminem released one of his most iconic tracks featuring Dido, “Stan.” The music video featured Devon Sawa as an obsessed fan who went to extreme lengths to get the attention of his favorite rapper. The success of the song coined the term “Stan” to refer to anyone being a huge fan of something. Fandom culture is something that has always been there but in recent years the obsession with an artist has reached new heights that have led to aggressive social media exchanges defending their fav. The upcoming Prime Video series appears to explore what happens when that obsession is taken too far.

Created by Janine Nabers and Donald Glover, Swarm stars Dominique Fishback as Dre, “a young woman whose obsession with a pop star takes a dark turn.” The Swarm official trailer showcases Dre’s obsession with pop star Ni’Jah and how she slowly spirals out of control. After the release of the trailer, many have already compared Dre’s behavior to fans of Beyoncé. I mean Beyhive, Swarm. There’s clearly some inspiration there. Swarm is giving “Ingrid Goes West” meets “Fatal Attraction” vibes. I might have to get my Prime Video subscription back.

Damson Idris, Rory Culkin, Chloe Bailey, Leon, Mezi Atwood, Kiersey Clemons, Rickey Thompson, Karen Rodriguez, and Nirine S. Brown also appear in the original series.

Swarm premieres March 17 on Prime Video.
