First Look: Halle Bailey Stars in ‘The Little Mermaid’ Live Action Coming in 2023

The anticipated live-action “The Little Mermaid” got its first look during Disney’s D23Expo, which is basically a weekend-long event that rolls out exclusive content and special announcements for the brand.

Halle Bailey is stepping, or swimming, into the role of Ariel in the reimagined live-action “The Little Mermaid.” I’m confident Halle has the vocal abilities to slay Ariel and her angelic face certainly fits a Disney princess. The first look didn’t give much, but it gave enough for Halle to trend on social media and for the memes to arise on how people will be showing up to theaters when the film drops. “The Little Mermaid” is definitely in my top 5 animated Disney films, so I’ll be checking this movie out.

From filmmaker Rob Marshall, the premise of the film follows the original. It tells “the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.”

Daveed Diggs will voice Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay will voice Flounder, Awkwafina will voice Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King plays Prince Eric, Art Malik plays Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni plays Queen Selina, Javier Bardem plays King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy plays Ursula. Alan Menken is back to score the film along with Howard Ashman and Lin-Manuel Miranda adding to the soundtrack.

Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” comes to theaters on May 26, 2023.
