Enter Planet Her era!

On Friday, June 25 Doja Cat dropped her third studio album Planet Her with tracks featuring Ariana Grande, SZA, The Weeknd, JID, and Young Thug. The 25-year-old, who will have a set at the 2021 Made in America Festival in Philadelphia later this year, blends her unmatchable rap cadence with her striking vocals to deliver a body of work that rivals her Hot Pink and Amala counterparts. Here’s my breakdown of each track from my FIRST listen letting you know if you should PLAY or PASS.

1. Woman
Doja Cat opens her third studio album with the lively “Woman.” This is easily a performance track in that it would probably really sound even better in a live atmosphere. It’s giving Motherland bass with earthy vocals leading to a flawless rap verse from Doja. I love when she flips back and forth from rapping and singing. Very strong open. PLAY

2. Naked
The high energy of the album continues with “Naked.” You can tell Doja was playing around with beats and the variations of her voice for this album and it’s evident in “Naked.” I could hear this bumping in the club. Again I feel this song is a good performance piece and was placed after “Woman” for a reason. The two blend well to be played back to back. PLAY

3. Payday (feat. Young Thug)
Transcend into a mystical fairy forest of rap. That’s what the opening was giving me. I felt like I was floating. I don’t hate the beat, but I’m not a Young Thug fan and I feel he messed up the song. Once his verse started I was like who the hell is this and it felt like a completely different song to me until Doja came back in. Three songs in and I’m going to suggest a skip for this. PASS.

4. Get Into It (Yuh)
Taking inspiration from Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack” and her flow, Doja slides on “Get Into It (Yuh).” I immediately was feeling this song, but as I looked at the “Yuh” in the song I thought Ariana Grande should be featured on this since it’s basically her song catchphrase. Then Doja referenced Ari and the “Yuh” and I knew I loved this song. When I tell you Doja goes TF off on the second verse I’m not exaggerating. Pump this real loud and get into it! Yuh! PLAY

5. Need To Know
The second single off Planet Her and it’s a HIT! Doja is really playing up the extra-terrestrial vibe throughout the album, but it’s highlighted on this track. Strap in and float in the spacey beat and breathy vocals from Doja. And if you haven’t seen the video it will make you like the song more. It did for me. PLAY

6. I Don’t Do Drugs (feat. Ariana Grande)
Two of my favorite girls on a track. What’s not to love? There’s no doubt in my mind that Ariana is going to do what she needs to do on a track and Doja matched her level. It perfectly sounds like a Doja Cat song and Ariana Grande song on both of their parts and melts into an R&B/Pop music masterpiece. PLAY

7. Love To Dream
Unfortunately, I would love to dream of skipping this song. While Doja sounds good on this track and it does give a mellow vibe; it’s nothing memorable about this song. The beat is so light and airy that it goes in one ear and out the other. PASS

8. You Right (feat. The Weeknd)
If “it’s a vibe” was truly a song it would be this track. I knew this was the song The Weeknd was on before he came in because it sounds just like something he would create. The beat is absolutely gorgeous and I’m glad Doja omitted a rap verse on this track and kept it strictly R&B. It has slight pulls from those good ’90’s R&B tracks and I could listen to this song on repeat all day. By far my favorite track on the album. PLAY

9. Been Like This
I’m an R&B girl through and through and that’s why I love Doja because she gives me that consistently with slight rap verses every now and then. This song is like a split personality balancing Doja’s R&B side with her Hip Hop side and for that I wouldn’t skip. You could have this playing in the background and not get annoyed when you tune in and realize it’s still on. PLAY

10. Options (feat. JID)
Maybe I don’t like Doja collaborating with male rappers because all the songs that feature them on it I don’t like. There’s not too much I can say about this track. It has a “mumble rapper” beat so it’s catchy, but not a go-to track for me. Maybe a few listens will change my mind about this song, but right now it’s on the bottom of the list of how I would rank this album. That flute section will haunt my dreams. PASS.

11. Ain’t Shit
Possibly one of Doja Cat fans most anticipated tracks. During quarantine 2020 Doja was always live streaming on different social media platforms. She would be doing her makeup or hair and playing music while interacting with fans. “Ain’t Shit” was one of the songs she teased and it sounds even better in a studio version. If you are going through a break-up, got ghosted, or having boy troubles in general blast this and remind yourself that you’re the bad bitch you always been.  PLAY

12. Imagine
Doja is winding down her album with “Imagine,” a song that you could take or leave. Filled with auto-tune vocals and oriental beats, “Imagine” is perfectly placed in the structure of the album because while it has a high energy beat it’s slow enough to let you know the journey through Planet Her is almost complete. PLAY

13. Alone
I love me some Doja, but I wished she left this track alone. I can say without a doubt that is my least favorite song. For some reason, I’m thinking about a Western when I hear this beat. There aren’t many redeeming parts about this song outside of Doja’s background vocals. This track is hard skip for me. PASS.

14. Kiss Me More (feat. SZA)
The last song on the album was the first track that introduced Doja fans into the Planet Her era as the lead single. It was lead for a reason, a perfect commercial single that blends Doja’s wacky rap style with SZA’s sultry persona. I admit this song was a grower and now I find myself humming it all the time. PLAY

Planet Her is a strong third body of work for Doja with a nice blend of slow and fast-paced tracks for any mood you’re in. The album is available now for digital download and where you stream your favorite artists.
