Say His Name, Say His Name – The First Trailer For ‘Candyman’ Is Buzzing

Legend has it that if you stand in the mirror and recite “Candyman” five times a hooked-hand killer will appear and slaughter you. It’s something I’m pretty sure we all did in our fearless youth or attempted to do to see if it would really happen. I probably got to four and ran out the bathroom saying the fifth just in case.

In the 1992 film grad student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) is researching the legend of Candyman (Tony Todd) when he is summoned. The 2020 Jordan Peele written/produced, Nia DaCosta directed “Candyman” is described as a “spiritual sequel” with the haunting killer returning to the gentrified Chicago area where the legend started.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as Anthony McCoy, (son of Anne-Marie McCoy played by Vanessa Williams reprising her 1992 role), a visual artist who becomes captivated by the Candyman legend and digs into the roots of the story. The first trailer was released on Thursday and instantly became a trending topic for many reasons. One main reason was from the use of Destiny’s Child “Say My Name” in the trailer remixed to a creepy rendition. People couldn’t help but to draw the parallels between the use of the song to Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It,” which was infamously used in Peele’s “Us” trailer. His ability to make once beloved songs eerie did not go unnoticed.

I must be honest though as much as I love horror films “Candyman” was never a stand out horror film for me.  Thank God for Netflix because I needed a refresher on how this movie even goes. It’s like I never saw it, but I didn’t find it scary at all. The only stand out part for me is that opening score. It’s awesome and made me immediately look up “Maneater” remix. I do enjoy my scary movies, so I think I’m going to mark this on my calendar as a 2020 film to see.

“Candyman” comes to theaters June 12, 2020.

Watch the official trailer for “Candyman” in the clip below. Will you be saying his name five times and going to the theaters to get into the “spiritual sequel?” Let me know in the comments.
