Does ‘P.S.: I Still Love You’ Give The Same Feels as ‘To All The Boys?’

Team Edward vs. Team Jacob who? It’s 2020 so it’s all about Team Peter and Team John. Sides have been drawn and points have been made. Not to be dramatic, but it’s time to chose your fighter. If you’re a “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” fan than you know what I’m talking about.

On Wednesday the sequel to the 2018 “To All The Boys” premiered on Netflix and the film, “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You,” became a trending topic for a large part of the day. In the second film Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) have moved from a pretend relationship to an actual one; a first for Lara Jean. She’s never had a boyfriend and is trying to navigate the new dynamics of how things are with Peter. Just when things are going smoothly trouble in paradise arises when John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher), a recipient of one of the love letters mailed in the first movie, shows up at the same place Lara Jean is volunteering. Mixed emotions leads to a love triangle and questions about who is right to love.

I really liked the first “To All the Boys.” I found myself beaming at the cheesy dialogue and swooning at the predictable plot, but it was cute. This was when Noah Centineo blew up and became the “internet’s boyfriend,” the soundtrack was really good and many of the songs ended up in my music library. I’m trying to figure out where the disconnect came with this one, but it wasn’t all the way there. I wasn’t that excited as I thought I would be watching “To All the Boys 2.”

One of the biggest changes from the first film to the second was John Ambrose. It was a subject that could not ignored. At the end of “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” John Ambrose (Jordan Burtchett) appeared with his letter in hand with Kitty (Anna Cathcart) excitedly calling for Lara Jean to come to the door. In the sequel it’s like that never happened, well it didn’t happen, because when Lara Jean and John Ambrose reconnect no mention of him showing up to her door was acknowledged. Many people were stressed about the casting switch, but that happens all the time with television and film. Sometimes the actor isn’t available or maybe the possibility of a follow up project wasn’t established so the actor wasn’t locked in to reprise a role. The continuity of it all bothered me the most how the last moments of the first film never happened.

With a key word in the title of this film being “love,” it truly was a major theme in the film and not just romantic love, but platonic. Lara Jean mentioned the Korean word “jung” during a pivotal scene between her and Gen (Emilija Baranac) which she says means “it’s a connection between two people that can’t be severed, Even when love turns to hate, you will always have tenderness in your heart for them.” This was a sweet takeaway because that can be applied to real life. Just because things go south with anyone, lovers or friends, if you once loved someone that kindess shouldn’t go away (hence “P.S. I Still Love”).

While I feel this sequel does’t compare to the first I’ve realized I’m such a sucker for rom coms. As much as I was half watching towards the end, I found myself tearing up because Peter came to drive Lara Jean home from the snow ball after they broke up because she doesn’t like driving in the snow.  I think us girl always fantasize about a happily ever after but as LJ said “I wanted something that doesn’t exist. I wanted happily ever after. But I know now that I don’t want a love in half measures. I want it all. And to have it all we have to risk it all.” P.S. I’m a clown. I’m Team Peter.

There were slight flaws and the sequel lacked a captivating plot, but it’s still worth watching to keep up with the sage. A third and final film is happening so minds well stay in the loop. I give “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” two Glambergirlblog kisses 💋💋
