If you’ve been online or basically anywhere over the past couple of days then you are fully aware of the news that sports legend Kobe Bryant died in a tragic helicopter accident on Sunday, January 26. I still can’t believe it and am in still in the standstill feeling I felt when I heard the news on Sunday. The first thing I said was “that isn’t true” and proceeded to scope the internet and watch television reports for the truth. A lot of misinformation was being spread within the first hours of the news, so it was difficult to know what was real or not. Unfortunately the news turned out to be true and along with Bryant eight others lost their lives.
Gianna Bryant, Kobe’s 13-year-old daughter, baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri Altobelli, their teen daughter Alyssa Altobelli, mother and daughter Sarah Chester and Payton Chester, Mamba Academy basketball coach Christina Mauser, and pilot of the chopper Ara Zobayan all perished during the accident.
Details about the crash seem insignificant to me because the results are still the same. Fathers, siblings, mothers, friends, and families lost someone they truly care about and that’s something that’s been in my heart and mind all week. My family is the single most important thing to me, so I can understand how devastating something like this is.
Outside of the cultural impact Kobe Bryant had, he was still a person just like the other people who died in the crash. His life is no more valuable than the others who died alongside him in that horrific accident. So when you say your prayers, or whatever your spiritual practices, over this situation please include all those who are hurting.
There’s nothing else I really have to say. I debated about posting this at all because I don’t like to focus on things that make me sad, but I do want to remind all you reading this that your life is precious. Your life means something to somebody even if it’s not publicized to the masses. Cherish the times you have on this Earth with the people who mean the most to you. Everything else is confetti.
Rest well to those souls who lives were lost and God be with the families and loved ones who are mourning.
