Let’s Chat: The ‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale Didn’t Reach Fans Expectations [OPINION] But Mines Were Satisfied...

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones has come and gone. I still can’t believe six weeks went by that fast, let alone the two years we had to wait for the series to come to an end. Fans of the show (hard-core ones who have watched the show since the pilot in April 2011, ones who just watched to see what the hype was about, ones who caught on late, but are still invested, and those who hate watch) were either in an uproar about their utter disappointment of season 8 or didn’t feel it deserved all the hate. I’m the latter.

Fans blamed bad writing, rushed plots, destroyed character arcs, pointless prophecies, and so much more as reasons why season 8 was “trash.” They even went so far as to start an online petition calling for the remake of the final season with new writers. Many of the cast spoke out on that calling it rude saying the petition undermined all the hard work the cast and crew have done for the show for the past decade. I agree. Have we forgotten what show we were watching? The fans have gone soft expecting everything to be lemon cakes and cup cakes. This is not a show for the faint of heart. If you think you were indeed watching a fairy tale because Jaime Lannister favored Prince Charming so much in season 1, then allow me to give you a kind reminder.

And for the “destroyed character arcs;” unless you are George R.R. Martin himself, how do you know this isn’t exactly how these characters would end up?  Ok, rant over. Let’s chat about the show. I’m breaking it down into key themes FOR ME and what I narrowed in as my favorite parts of the finale. I shouldn’t have to say, you clicked on a Game of Thrones post so what did you expect but, SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Pack Survived

I’ve been House Stark since the beginning. I’m not sure when it clicked, but I always gravitated towards them. Maybe because I’m a Daddy’s girl and seeing the Stark girls lose their dad in such a brutal way hit me hard and from then on I wanted this family to win in life. Every character in this series had pretty awful things happen to them, but when I think back I cried the most about things that happened with House Stark.

So you can imagine my pure elation that they actually survived this series. A show faithful for taking out key characters. I was so scared for Arya Stark. She’s hands down my favorite character. There were many times I thought she would die in the final season and expressed my worries on blog posts and on social media, so her being alive by credit roll is a perfect season for me. Would I have loved for Gendry fine ass Baratheon to be on that ship with Arya sailing beyond Westeros? Yes, but this isn’t a fairy tale so I can accept that they both are alive and well apart. Sansa being named Queen of the North and Bran the King of the six remaining kingdoms. Wonderful.

Dany’s Death

Grab the tissues because this one hurt. Daenerys Targaryen has been a bad ass fan fav character. Emilia Clarke brought her to life in the perfect way. Despite the backlash, I think Dany becoming “the Mad Queen” was something that inevitable. She has always been quick-tempered and had a “my way or the highway” attitude to me with her advisers calming her down and changing her mind from doing things a certain way. With her most trusted people no longer alive to guide her I believe she lost sight of the things that made her human.

Dany unleashed the dragon, literally, on King’s Landing leading Jon Snow and Tyrion to see a side of her they truly feared and betrayed her. I would have loved for Tyrion to get that Queenslayer title like his brother had the Kingslayer title, but in reality Dany stilled loved Jon so he was the only one who could haven’t got that close to her unguarded to be able to kill her. You can see it gutted him to do it, but Jon is honest Abe and wants to save the realm from anymore potential damage Dany could do. Drogon nudging Dany and carrying her away still makes me cry and I’ve watched the fnale three times so far. Dany you been a real one. I won’t let one moment of darkness throw out what she did before she crossed the narrow sea.

The Council & The Iron Throne

One of the final scenes of the show served as some comedic relief even if it wasn’t intended. All the heads of the great house got together to decide who would rule the kingdoms and it was priceless. From seeing Lord Robin all glowed up to Sansa checking her uncle Lord Edmure. From seeing Gendry fine self in his new Lord get up (Yes, I’m so thirsty for Gendry) to Arya setting Yara straight about talking down on her brother. It was the ideal scene. I could watch a whole series of all of them interacting. Since Drogon melted the throne, rightfully so it killed his mommy, I’m glad the chair no longer exists and the wheel Dany wanted broken is gone. The “Iron Throne” won’t be a thing passed down from family to family, but to the next suitable ruler. Good.

In conclusion, I’m glad Jon took the black, again, and went to the “true North” with Ghost there. Grey Worm and The Unsullied are going to Naath. (RIP Missandei) Tyrion is hand, again, Brienne and Podrick are the knights they deserve to be and Bronn got his damn castle. I have zero complaints.
