It’s 18 days into the new year and Ariana Grande has already created a whole mood for 2019 with the release of her latest single “7 rings,” off her upcoming fifth studio album to be called thank u, next.

The 25-year-old has been dropping hints about the new song ever since NOVEMBER. A license plate with the title of the song can be seen in the “thank u, next’ music video and the beat of the song is even featured in the opening Regina George love fest parody sequence at the top of that visual. All week the pop princess teased the song with the release on Friday. January 18th.

As reported earlier, “7 rings” was inspired by a dark time in Ariana’s life. The end of 2018 was rough for the songstress as she was still dealing with aftermath of her concert bombing in Manchester the year prior, the untimely loss of her ex, rapper Mac Miller, and the ending of her engagement to comedian and SNL personality Pete Davidson. She got tipsy with friends and ended up at Tiffany’s purchasing matching diamond rings for six of her best girlfriends. The song is not only an homage to that moment but about living her bossed up, rich AF life getting everything she wants with no limit, especially when a price tag is involved.

I really enjoyed the record. It was written by Ari along with some of her frequent collaborators so you know she had another hit on her hands.  It’s a shame this level of Grande’s artistry had to come after such tragedy in her life, but she’s a prime example of turning lemons into lemonade. With this third single, no shade, I feel like this upcoming album is shaping up to be what Sweetener was supposed to be, a body of work really showcasing her talent. “thank u, next” earned Grande her first number one single, “imagine” brought out seasoned whistle tones, and “7 rings” showcased trap Ariana. She has an undeniable voice for R&B and this new music is showing it off forever marking her presence in the music industry.

Some of the most notable, and Instagram caption worthy, lines from the “7 rings” track include: “Write my own checks like I write what I sing,” “Whoever said money can’t solve your problems, must not have enough money to solve them,” and “Been through some bad shit, I should be a sad bitch. Who woulda thought it’d turn me to a savage.” It was one line in particular that sparked a controversy. Before Ari spits “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it,” another line slayage, she sings “You like my hair? Gee thanks, just brought it.” That came across the attention of artist Princess Nokia. She called out Ariana with no regards pointing out to the similarities she heard in the new single with her 2017 song “Mine” off her 1922 Deluxe album boldly saying the similar song sounds “about white.”

Now y’all know I love Ariana and I am in no way a Stan where everything she does is gold, but I honestly don’t hear the comparison. And I sure don’t hear it with “Pretty Boy Swag,” another song “7 rings” is being compared to. Did nobody catch the “My Favorite Things” flow? Or are we just ignoring that and trying to make everything about race and cultural appropriation these days. Can I see the inspiration “7 rings” has in other songs” Sure, but is it an entire jack off Princess Nokia’s record. Don’t think so. You didn’t invent the subject about hair or buying hair. And while unfortunately people assume black women mainly only wear wigs, weaves, and extensions; we are not the only culture that does so. In the words of Jay Z, “You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song.”

Anywho, this is Ariana’s day. Check out the visual for Ariana Grande’s “7 rings” in the clip below. Are you feeling the track? Let me know in the comments.
