In recent years the idea of the Ouija Board has been explored on the big screen with countless films putting their spin on the spirit board talking to the unknown. Cinematographer Ben Demaree made his directorial debut on “Ouija House” starring Mischa Barton, Carly Schroeder, Dee Wallace, and Tara Reid; a project Reid just couldn’t say no to having worked with Demaree on the first three “Sharknado” films.

“Ouija House” takes the concept of the board a step further adding elements of spirits and an authenticity that sets it apart from similar films. “It’s a real Ouija board. It’s not the one you buy at Toys ‘R’ Us or wherever. It was a real, authentic Ouija board,” Reid said about what makes this film stand out. “It’s probably a couple 100 years old, so the people who played on that makes it even scarier. Who knows what happened to the people who played on that Ouija board. You’re asking to play with the darker side and that’s something you have to be careful with.”

Reid plays the younger version of a character named Katherine in the film and explains her role as someone horror film lovers may be familiar with. “You know how Drew Barrymore opens the movie ‘Scream?’ Mines is the fifteen minute opener of the whole entire thing. So I open the movie then I’m gone, but there are flashbacks of me here and there. I think it’s a really strong opening and I think the film does a good job in the horror genre.” The veteran actress also adds that the film is “spooky, kind of creepy and it has that fear factor which makes the movie fun.”

Any one who knows anything about Ouija Boards know they are not to be messed with lightly. Reid’s own experience with the board as a child heavily influenced how she approached this role. “When I was young I got a Ouija Board and I was playing with my best friend Rita; weird shit was going on. My dad walked into the bedroom and yelled at me in a way I’ve never been yelled at in my life. He took the Ouija Board outside of the house and burnt it on fire. After that I never played with it again. So when I got this role I was afraid to do it.”

Tara took the role of course, but was very serious about how she and the crew handled it on set. “One of the things you have to do on a Ouija Board is say goodbye. You have to do it. So if you want to close a session talking to spirits, you have to close it saying goodbye; that’s the only way the spirits get out [if you don’t]. When we were doing the movie at the end we didn’t say goodbye at one point and because I’m so superstitious I made everyone go back on the table and say goodbye.”

Despite the creepy subject matter there weren’t too many scary moments on set. The hardest thing however for Tara was to make her character seem natural. “She’s a storyteller and she tells the story of what happened in the house, but if I don’t sell you that part then the movie isn’t going to work. So for me the most important thing about me selling that part if that you believe the house is scary, you believe in the Ouija Board, and you believe it’s going to happen. Now the friends in the movie are scared, but I can’t act scared I have to act smart because the smarter I am, the creepier it gets.”

The Tara Reid film roster is super busy these days completely dominating the horror genre. “Party Bus to Hell,” “Cranial Sacral,” “Art of the Dead,” and “Attraction” are just some of the films that have been released, or are coming soon, with many set for a number of sequels. Tara Reid fans can catch her this summer in the final “Sharknado” film, “The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time” out July 25th.

“This is my favorite one and this is the final one. It goes out with a bang. I mean they’re all outrageous, they’re all so crazy, but this one takes it to a whole other level,” Reid said about the last “Sharknado” movie. “They time travel, they go to different genres, so like one day they’re with George Washington and then the next day they’re with the dinosaurs. It’s insane. And it’s the last one we let everything go. I haven’t seen it yet, but the director says it looks good, so I’m excited.”
