On Monday it was announced during FOX’s upfront presentation that the ground breaking music competition American Idol would be ending with its 15th and final season in 2016.

Current judges Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr., and Keith Urban will wrap up the show that is said to”pay tribute to the past 14 seasons.”

Ryan Seacrest, who has been a notable figure for the show as host over the past decade plus, shared his sentiments for the show that essentially launched his career. “American Idol has been a big part of my life for so long. It’s frankly hard to imagine [my life] without it,” Seacrest said in a statement. “It’s been a remarkable journey, and I feel very fortunate to have been part of a show that made television history in countless ways. It’s a show about chasing and fulfilling dreams, and truth be told, it helped some of my own dreams come true too.”

He added, “I’m so glad [the network] is going to give us a season-long send off. The last season will undoubtedly be a special and emotional one, but first I’m looking forward to closing out Season 14. The finale is always my favorite part—two live shows with lots of surprises, and, of course, one winner!”

Seacrest then gave Idol fans a little throwback action when he tweeted a photo of himself from the very first season of the iconic music competition. “you guys I was 27 when we started idol… just a kid,” he tweeted along with a photo of himself standing next to the first American Idol Kelly Clarkson and runner-up Justin Guarini. Back in 2002, American Idol was the show to watch for hilarious auditions and talent that blew you away. Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson were the judging trio that started it all, later leaving the show and had replacements such as: Ellen DeGeneres, Steven Tyler, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey.

Idol was also responsible for kick starting the careers of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Chris Daughtry. I think with the upcoming final season we could expect a HUGE, star-studded send off to give the sinking ship a proper goodbye.
