Jamie Foxx stopped by Ellen to discuss his upcoming role as the lead in the Mike Tyson biopic and his infamous rendition of the National Anthem during this past weekends high-profile fight between Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

“I met Mike Tyson when I was 21, we were all doing stand up comedy at that time and I was burning LA down..I was like the hottest comic coming through and I get to my Mike Tyson joke and we in the hood, at this hood club and I get to the Mike Tyson joke, I’m bout to kill it and it’s dead silence, because Mike Tyson is in the audience,” Jamie tells Ellen DeGeneres about his first encounter with Tyson. He continued, “And it’s back in the time when Mike was knocking people out for having on the wrong shirt. So no ones laughing and this dude, who I still know to this day, yelled out from the back ‘Um Mike Tyson’s in here’ and some black girls in the front talking about ‘What you going to do Jamie? You going to tell the joke, you going to tell your little joke now Jamie’?”

He continued to tell the story about performing his Mike Tyson joke for the retired boxer, of course there was an impression, and how the two became friends. Foxx also mentioned he didn’t know he was preparing for this upcoming role by getting to see the man in his prime firsthand.

Later when asked about his iffy National Anthem performance during fight night, Foxx told DeGeneres, “What happened in the ring, my ears [earpieces] came out, my inner ears,” Foxx told DeGeneres. “My inner ears were out, and I’m singing with an organ, so I can’t hear what the organ is doing with the big crowd, so some of it was a little off but in the arena it killed. The telecast it was a little off, but we still love America.”
