By now we all know everything that Ryan Murphy touches turns to gold, and not just award-winning gold, but the type of television gold that leaves a permanent mark in pop culture. Murphy, along with his team of amazing producers and writers, have worked on countless projects but some of the biggest ones to date are: Glee, American Horror Story, Nip/Tuck, Popular, and “The Normal Heart.” Scream Queens debuting this fall is just one of the anticipated series that has the RM seal of awesomeness.

FOX’s Scream Queens is a new anthology series, in what I like to think will combine to funny of Glee season 1 and 2 with the creepy/gore factor of AHS, and will follow a killer stalking a sorority at a college campus for its introductory season. The who’s who of young Hollywood and horror movie legends make up the outstanding cast; including: Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele, Keke Palmer, Oliver Hudson, Abigail Breslin, Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Ryan Murphy and he gave the site exclusive details on the plot of the show, choosing the cast, and more!

“Brad and Ian and I, all three of us, were always obsessed with the ’80s/early ’90s slasher genre that was always about young people and always about coming of age,” Murphy said about inspiration for his new show. “So we loved that and we decided to sort of be inspired by that idea. That was sort of the impetus of it. It’s sort of the idea of what would happen if you put something like “Heathers” meets “Friday the 13th” to those genre pictures like Massacre on Sorority Row, that early-to-late ’80s exploitation horror thing,” he added.

Murphy then describe the plot of Scream Queens revealing, “It opens in a flashback to 1995 at the sorority where something horrible happens. It’s a mystery that goes unsolved. Flash forward 20 years to today, and it looks like someone is out for revenge. Something horrible happened to a pledge and on the anniversary of that crime, someone is out for vengeance.”

Emma Roberts is one of the stars of the show, who first received her golden ticket to the Ryan Murphy money train playing Madison Montgomery on season 3 of American Horror Story, Coven. Murphy shared some details of the character Roberts plays. “Emma Roberts is Chanel, who’s the president of Kappa Sorority. She’s very funny and very ruthless. All her life all she’s wanted to do is be president of Kappa and have this great boyfriend and rule the roost. She’s very fashionable and very ruthless,” he said, adding, “I love Emma. It was written for her. She’s super funny.”

One of the original queens of horror, Jamie Lee Curtis, also stars in the comedy-horror series and plays Cathy Munsch, dean of the school. Ryan Murphy describes Cathy Munsch as “a leader and a crusader and might have to shut down the system by literally killing them all. She’s just had it.”

Keke Palmer, Abigail Breslin, and Ariana Grande are the ones to watch in the series. Palmer’s character Zayday is said to be “a genius IQ” who doesn’t really like sororities, although she’s in one and is set to challenge to norm at the university. Breslin and Grande are Roberts’ character henchwomen along with Billie Lourd, who are referred to as Chanel #5, Chanel #2, and Chanel #3. basically the Ashley’s from Recess.

If you’re wondering if Scream Queens will follow the AHS premise of rebooting with the same cast, then you are kind of right, and wrong. “It’s different than Horror Story. Jamie Lee and I were talking about that in horror movies, particularly in that era, there was always the last girl, the final girl. So we’re playing with that.”

“Whoever survives—and there will be people who will survive—they will go on next season to a new location and a new terror. Unlike Horror Story, which completely reboots, this has some of the continuity in that some of the characters and some of the relationships continue into a new world.” – Very cool!
