RIP: ‘Fresh Prince’ Uncle Phil Actor James Avery Dead

A day into the new year we already have sad news in Hollywood.

James Avery, an actor known for his role as Phillip Banks aka Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air has passed away.

TMZ reported that the actor who also appeared in shows like The Closer, Greys Anatomy, and The Jeffersons, died during open heart surgery from complications.

His wife Barbara was present during the surgery, left for a moment and learned of his death when she returned.

Alfonso Ribeiro, the actor who played Avery’s on-screen son Carlton Banks on Fresh Prince, shared his grief on Twitter posting a photo of Avery and his wife with the caption, “I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.” He posted a similar message on Facebook.

James Avery was 65.
