The 54th annual Grammy Awards was expected to have a different tone this year given the very recent past of pop legend Whitney Houston. Airing on Sunday, Feb. 12, on CBS and with the first host in seven years; LL Cool J set the tone of the show by opening with a prayer after “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen did a performance. LL acknowledged Ms. Houston but also brought light to the fact that music’s biggest night was just about that; MUSIC!

Another buzz about the show was Chris Brown and Rihanna being in the same room after such a public and brutal break-up way back when. Both of the artist performed and everything seemed to go smoothly between the two, that we know of. Adele was a huge winner of the night, Best Pop Vocal Album and Song of the Year was only two of her many wins. Other wins of the night include Chris Brown for Best R & B Album and The Foo Fighters for Best Rock Performance.

And I think I have a crush on Bruno Mars now. His performance was great and the fact that he said “get off your rich asses and let’s have some fun” during his performance scored him points in my book. Other great performances to me included Rihanna and Coldplay, Adele and Chris Brown.

Everyone was holding their breaths for the anticipated tribute to Whitney Houston from Jennifer Hudson. Of course the Grammy’s held that moment to damn near the bitter end. Hudson was reportedly very distraught during rehearsals and had a hard time getting through the performance but she did a pretty good job live. The “Whitney” tribute wasn’t just about her but all great musical geniuses recently lost. I thought I would cry, at least get misty eyed at the tribute but I was able to remain calm. Good tribute nonetheless.
