The end of the year is upon us so it’s time to wrap up 2023 with Glambergirlblog’s Top 10 Films of 2023. Last year had an interesting list of films from animation, dark comedies, and of course horror. This year is kind of the same with some surprises I didn’t expect.
Before I get into my top 10 list I want to mention a few things. I feel “Challengers” could have been on this year’s list, but the writer’s and actor’s strike pushed the film until 2024, so maybe this film will make that list. I also tried to watch a bunch of films this year that got award buzz, but I didn’t find them interesting. I watched “May December” and think Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton did good jobs acting, but the overall plot was lackluster to me. Same with “Quiz Lady.” There were a few laughable moments and Sandra Oh had a standout performance but not enough to make my list.
Timothée Chalamet was entertaining in “Wonka” and so was Barry Keoghan in “Saltburn,” but again the overall plots of their films didn’t have me fully engaged. The films that made my list either have sentimental reasons or I simply was invested in the story. Below are Glambergirlblog’s 10 films of 2023.
Glambergirlblog’s Top 10 Films of 2023
10. “M3GAN”
This year has been so insanely long that I can’t even believe “M3GAN” came out this year, but it did. “M3GAN” was the first movie I saw in theaters in the new year and my first horror flick. I’m always going to gravitate towards a horror movie and this one was camp galore with a killer robotic doll that rivaled Chucky. I came to see what made M3GAN do that dance in the trailer and ended up enjoying the entire flick.
9. “Poor Things”
I got to see “Poor Things” during the New York Film Festival back in September. It was high on my list because of Emma Stone and she delivered as the film followed the evolution and sexual awakening of Bella Baxter (Stone). It’s a film that you have to sit with. It was a bit long for my tastes but the performances are what will keep your attention.
8. “Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé”
Beyoncé’s documentary film “Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé” made this list for a few reasons, it’s Bey and the doc was a peak inside her very successful Renaissance World Tour. I went to the Renaissance tour this summer so I got to experience the show live, but reliving the show in theaters and getting to see what went into making the show was very interesting.
7. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”
Chris Pratt and “Guardians of the Galaxy” got me interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so watching “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3” wrap up its trilogy was emotional and entertaining. The story was much more sorrowful than the films before because this was the end of the Guardians as we know them and it showed the heartbreaking backstory of Rocket (Bradley Cooper). I was all in from the intro to the end.
6. “Fair Play”
I saw the trailer and read the plot for “Fair Play,” but still had no idea what I was getting into. Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich star in the film as a secret couple who work at a competitive hedge fund. When one gets promoted over the other true colors start showing. This movie is a perfect example of someone wanting you to do better but not better than them. This was a wild ride.
5. “Thanksgiving”
The “Thanksgiving” movie proved there needs to be more horror films centered on that holiday. There’s so much material for it. In Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” a Black Friday event sparks a spree of murders by a masked killer as the killer picks off residents of Plymouth. The use of Thanksgiving puns and kills was very appetizing leaving me wanting a second helping.
4. “Barbie”
The world of plastic came to life with “Barbie” this year. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling perfectly captured the essence of Barbie and Ken while the film delivered a message of womanhood and building your own identity along with dropping maybe the best original song with “I’m Just Ken.” “Barbie” brought me back to my childhood and pushed my adulthood forward.
3. “Scream VI”
I’m a horror lover through and through and “Scream VI” made me realize how much I love this franchise. “Scream” is a horror franchise that honors horror movies highlighting all the troupes we’ve come to know and love about the genre. There was more gore and surprises in this film and who knows if we’ll get another one of that caliber so “Scream VI” is even more important than ever.
2. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”
Nostalgia was so real while watching “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” The second the intro credits started rolling I found myself overwhelmed with the joy I got playing Mario as a child on Super Nintendo. The animation in this film was gorgeous, the game Easter eggs made me smile, and Jack Black performing “Peaches” as Bowser stayed with me all year.
1. “Theater Camp”
I love musicals and if I could sing or dared to act I would SO be a theater kid. Although “Theater Camp” isn’t classified as a musical it still has musical elements as the kids at AdirondACTS summer camp prepped for their annual show while the camp was on the brink of closing for good. The movie is filmed in doc style and I was laughing a few minutes in. I know a film gets me if I cry and “Theater Camp” got some tears out of me. I loved this movie.
