(***Update: Editor’s Note – The Renaissance film is confirmed to release in theaters on December 1 – Watch the trailer HERE.)
She came. She slayed. She conquered.
After a worldwide tour that spanned almost 8 months Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour has come to an end closing out Act I of the Renaissance era. (Or has she?) Back on July 29, 2022, Bey released her wiggle with her seventh solo studio album, Renaissance. The 16-track album brought disco trap to the masses and emerged a rebirth for Queen Bey as fans anticipated a tour in the new year.
On the first of February, the Renaissance World Tour was announced. The tour kicked off on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in Stockholm and wrapped on Sunday, October 1 in Kansas City.
Now that the tour is over, Act II of the Renaissance is rumored to be a feature film documentary chronicling the journey of the Renaissance and the tour. It is alleged to come to AMC only this December, but before we get into the new era let’s revisit the first.
The Renaissance World Tour, RWT, had some major moments. From Philly welcoming Bey home to the States, to the torrential downpour Bey performed in during the Washington, D.C. stop and her makeup remaining flawless, to Blue Ivy slaying the stage, and the tour bringing in an estimated $4.5 billion for the American economy; it’s no doubt the RWT was the tour of the decade. Here are my 6 favorite moments from the Renaissance World Tour!
The Mute Wars
It took a while for fans to catch on to what Beyoncé was doing when she performed “Energy,” the fifth track off Renaissance, but when they did it took on a life of its own. In the first verse of the song, Bey sings,” Big wave in the room, the crowd gon’ move. Look around everybody on mute.” There’s a small pause on the track, but while performing Beyoncé took an exaggerated pause expecting the audience to stay silent until the track started back again. Overseas it was a big chop, but we in the States took it very seriously. It was exciting watching the videos circulate from different cities to see who could achieve what was deemed “the mute challenge.” I’m no hater and I don’t think any city got COMPLETELY silent, but Atlanta (I believe night 1) was the best.
Blue Ivy’s Stage Debut
It’s crazy to think I remember where I was when Beyoncé performed “Love on Top” during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards announcing she was pregnant. That child would later be born as the “legendary” Blue Ivy Carter. It was an unexpected surprise for Blue Ivy to perform with her mom on tour during the “My Power” song, from the 2019 The Lion King: The Gift album. Blue appeared in the music video for “My Power,” but seeing her on stage performing the song live was so much better. The RWT became the Blue Ivy tour as fans anxiously hoped Blue would appear in their city. It’s also touching to see her growth as a performer watching her get more comfortable on stage.
BeyDay in LA
9-4-8-1. BDAY. The only thing that could be better than seeing Beyoncé perform in her hometown of Houston would be to see her perform on her birthday. The “BeyDay” RWT date took place on September 4 at Los Angeles’s SoFi Stadium. Celebrities have been flooding the Renaissance tour for months, but the BeyDay show had more A-listers than the Met Gala. Diana Ross sang “Happy Birthday” to Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar came out during the “America Has A Problem” remix, and the Beyhive assembled to swing yellow and black balloons and also sing HBD during the opening minutes of the show.
H-town Girls Get Down
It’s no secret Megan Thee Stallion is a huge Beyoncé fan. The H-town native and her late mother deeply bonded over the love they had for the artist, so it was only right that Bey would bring out the Hot Girl to perform the 2020 “Savage” remix on both Houston dates on September 23 and 24. It was a moment that clearly brought joy to both of the girls and it was sweet to watch.
@theestallionYall ive been ugly crying with my lace lifting all weekend lol i will never stop screaming about this moment! I have loved BEYONCE my WHOLE LIFE this means EVERYTHING TO ME! I love you BEY 💙💙💙 thank you for everything♬ original sound – Megan Thee Stallion
House of Chrome
Getting dressed for concerts isn’t nothing new in my book, but Bey bumped it up another level. The color of Renaissance was deemed silver/or chrome ever since the album dropped. Bey wore a silver look on the album cover and started wearing more of the color at appearances after the album dropped. Fans took to the challenge and either recreated tour looks or rocked creative silver attire they brought or DIY’ed. Online and retail stores started carrying a lot more silver and there were even sections in stores that were dedicated to the House of Chrome. During Virgo season Bey specially requested silver attire from her fans. Now whenever I see silver from here on out I will think of the Renaissance.
Watching Bey’s costume changes was also exciting to see. Every show had a new opening number dress and different cities got different looks. The fashion was ON POINT.
The Big 3
On January 21, 2023, Beyoncé gave a private performance during the unveiling of the luxury hotel resort Atlantis The Royal in Dubai. It was the first concert Bey did at that time since 2018. During the show, she performed a new arrangement of her 2013 single “Drunk in Love” off her self-titled album. Only a few lucky lot got to hear her perform the song live during the RWT because she didn’t do it in every city. That “Drunk in Love” rendition along with “Thique” and “All Up In Your Mind” was later deemed “The Big 3” by the fans whenever it was performed at a show. Philly wasn’t lucky enough to get the three extra songs so I had to live vicariously through videos posted.
Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour brought so much joy, fashion, and memorable pop culture moments that will go down in history. What a great Act I so far! Which parts of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour was your favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments.
