With the death of Raina St. Patrick on STARZ’ Power, emotions are running high especially for Naturi Naughton’s character Tasha St. Patrick who is playing the role of grieving mother in season 5. For the past seasons Tasha has been the backbone of the family handling crisis after crisis with poise, finesse, and an indestructible demeanor, but even the strongest people need a moment to breakdown.
“You can be a strong woman and still have a moment where you need to breakdown. You can be a good mother and still say I need help. I can’t do this alone,” Naughton told reporters at the press junket for Power season 5. “Tasha represents strength, but she should always represents humanity. She should represent vulnerability.” This season you’ll see Tasha go through that and fans will go on a journey with her and see the phoenix rise from the ashes.
Growth is another big component for the Tasha character this season because for the first time she’s truly independent from Ghost. “She’s dealing with having to keep the family together, having to mourn her daughter’s death. She can’t even rely on Ghost to mourn if you watch the first couple of episodes he kind of shutting down and mourning differently and I’m mourning in the pain of that. I can’t even lean on him.”
Surprisingly Tasha is leaning on an unlikely ally, Angela Valdes played by Lela Loren. “I think now Tasha is less focused on the fact that Angela is the mistress that pretty much ruined her family, but she’s more focused on the resources that Angela has as a federal prosecutor. She’s somebody in law that I need to protect Tariq, so at this point I know that my alliance with her is not because I like her, not because I’m not mad, but because I know I need her on my side.”
One thing that was on everyone’s mind during the press junket was how Naturi managed to channel the convincing level of grief she had to tap into. “Not only just for me being a new mother, I was thinking about while shooting the scene with Raina’s death, I was actually pregnant at that time in season 4, I was like 5 months but hiding it. It was deep for me because I was pulling from the fact that I was growing life inside of me while on a television show, although make believe ,having to deal with the emotions of losing a daughter so that was hard.”
Moving forward in the season fans will have to pay close attention to the transformation of Tasha and see if she’ll maintain that ride or die facade she’s mastered since day one.
