It seems no matter what you do these days people will find someway to bring you down.

Nina Davuluri made history when she went from Miss New York to Miss America and was crowned during the annual pageant on Sunday, September 15. Davuluri is the first Miss America winner of Indian decent but while she is ecstatic about representing her culture in a major way many people felt differently.

Nina Davuluri has received a lot of negative, racist backlash about being selected as the winner. Twitter was the platform for all the hateful comments remarking on Davuluri’s heritage and that an “Arab” should not have won because “this is America.” Davuluri’s citizenship was even called into question upon receiving her title.

As a true poised leader would do, Nina Davuluri responded to the hateful comments with grace saying, “I’m so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I’m thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America.” She added remarks about the racist comments stating, “I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.”

How do you feel about the racist comments about Miss America Nina Davuluri?
