Breaking into Hollywood isn’t easy and when you add in factors like your race or gender the odds are even more stacked against you, but there are some that still prevail. In Apple TV+’s upcoming two-part documentary film “Number One on the Call Sheet,” an in-depth look at what some of Hollywood’s greatest Black talent had to go through to gain respect in the industry is dissected.
The title of doc comes from a term in Hollywood used to describe the first actor listed on the daily production schedule. That top spot usually means the actor is the lead of the project. In part 1 of the documentary called “Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood,” actors open up about historic firsts, the true role of a lead actor, the art of sustained success, and global box office domination. In part 2 called “Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Women in Hollywood,” the ladies talk about their big breaks, navigating Hollywood’s star system with grace, and claiming a seat at the table.
Famed talent featured in the doc include John Boyega, Reuben Cannon, Don Cheadle, Morris Chestnut, Ice Cube, Taye Diggs, Idris Elba, Laurence Fishburne, Jamie Foxx, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, Robi Reed, Nina Shaw, Will Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Denzel Washington, Marlon Wayans, Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Vivica A. Fox, Whoopi Goldberg, Meagan Good, Tiffany Haddish, Taraji P. Henson, Nia Long, Ruth Negga, Gabourey Sidebe, Jurnee Smollett, Octavia Spencer, Tessa Thompson, Gabrielle Union, and Alfre Woodard.
