Apple TV+’s thriller series Severance has returned for a second season after its three year hiatus and I’m reminded why I was so obsessed with this show when it premiered back in 2022 and why it melted my brain in the best way!
Mark S., Irving, Dylan G., and Helly R. (Adam Scott, John Turturro, Zach Cherry and Britt Lower) returned to our screens on Friday, January 17, although technically the season 2 premiere dropped a few hours early at 9pm EST on January 16, and picked up where season 1 left off. If you’ve landed on this page then you know all about the premise of Severance. This isn’t a post to recap what we already know, but for me to offer up some thoughts on the new episode and what’s to come. (If you need an idea of what the show is about click HERE.)
Although the first season of Severance had weekly drops, I didn’t catch on to the show until the finale of the first was about to air, so I had pretty much all the episodes to binge and I loved that I was able to do that, but now watching the show in real time I appreciate the weekly episodes because the season premiere is melting my brain already. I thought I wrapped my head around the “innie” and “outtie” concept but with the overtime twist from the season 1 finale now I’m bewildered. I know they are one body, but is the outtie essentially asleep when the other takes over? It’s also pretty obvious that Helly is off. She lied about what happened with her outtie and acted like she didn’t lay one on Mark before going up the elevator. Where IS Ms. Casey? What really happens when an innie retires? What happened to Miss Cobel? And don’t get me started on the goats?
The many questions of Severance often leads viewers down a rabbit hole of theories and I’m on that wave. But what has been a helpful tool is Ben Stiller (executive producer/director of Severance) and Adam Scott’s (Mark S./executive producer of Severance) podcast simply titled The Severance Podcast. The podcast series goes through each episode of season 1, and will be going through each episode of season 2 as it drops, breaking down the plot, how certain scenes were shot and the mindset of the characters with special guests along the way like creator Dan Erickson, cast members Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, John Tuturro, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, and super fans Jon Stewart, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard (Theirs was HILARIOUS).
I always enjoy the creative process of things and Severance is one of those shows I’m seriously intrigued about so listening to the podcast episodes was not only insightful but inspired me to go down a rabbit hole of the show. I need to consume everything I can about this show. If you have any recommendations of what lane I should go through next please let me know in the comments.
New episodes of Severance air every Friday through March 21, 2025. New episodes of The Severance Podcast drop right after each new episode airs.
