There’s always that small voice in your head guiding you on the most mundane of things. They call it intuition and whenever I’ve gone against it the outcome is never in my favor. You should always follow that gut feeling. This idea becomes apparent in the drama thriller “Mothers’ Instinct” starring Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway.
Based on by the book written by Barbara Abel, developed for screen by Sarah Conradt, and directed by Benoît Delhomme, “Mothers’ Instinct” follows the idealistic life of 1960’s housewives, neighbors, and close friends Alice (Chastain) and Céline (Hathaway). When Céline’s young son has a fatal fall from a balcony, the friendship between the ladies unravels revealing cracks in relationships all around them and the dark side of maternal love.
I wrote about the trailer release of “Mothers’ Instinct” last January so it’s crazy that it took me a year to finally see this film. I was intrigued by the trailer and was curious on how the story would go. And boy, did it go in a direction I wasn’t expecting. Give Anne Hathaway a bob and she’s going to go deranged. Hathaway gave a composed to unhinged performance of how a mother’s grief can alter your existence. Watching her portrayal of Céline had me thinking back on the movie once it was over to see if I could pick up on her sinister nature. Alice was suspicious and overprotective with Chastain playing those nuances convincingly on screen.
This film is slow. The thrills come in ebbs and flows, but the performances and the final act is what gives “Mothers’ Instinct” worth a watch. The main takeaways from this film is to never doubt your instincts and the lengths a mother will go to for a child.
“Mothers’ Instinct” is streaming now on Hulu.
