The end of the month is here, but before we rang in a new year it’s time to look at the past 12 months and review the best of 2024. Glambergirlblog has featured posts that broke down my favorite music, TV shows, and pop culture moments of the year and now it’s time for the final post. Finally, Best of 2024: Movies I Couldn’t Stop Thinking About

As a proud AMC Premiere member I went to the movies a bunch this year. It is truly my happy place. Films in general bring me such joy and this year I tried to watch films I normally wouldn’t. Horror is my go to genre so many of the films I consume fall in that category, but I wanted to step outside the box. I still have ways to go with that notion but I think I did a pretty good job. There are still films that were buzzed about this year that I didn’t get a chance to see like “Anora,” “A Different Man,” “Heretic,” and “Don’t Move,” but from the ones I did get to see below are the ones that stuck with me the most.

“Blink Twice”
Directed by: Zoë Kravitz
Written by: Zoë Kravitz & E.T. Feigenbaum
Cast: Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Alia Shawkat, Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Liz Caribel, Levon Hawke, Trew Mullen, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan

“When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. As strange things start to happen, Frida questions her reality.”

The trailer for this film completely threw me off. I thought I was in for a “Knives Out” murder mystery type of film and it turned out to much more sinister. Channing Tatum gave a performance like never before and I was deeply disturbed by him. I’m still puzzled how a distressful film could be so appealing but I loved it and I think Zoë did an outstanding job in her directorial debut.

“Civil War”
Directed and Written by: Alex Garland
Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Jesse Plemons, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno

“In a dystopian future, four journalists travel across the United States during a nation-wide conflict. While trying to survive, they aim to reach the White House to interview the president before he is overthrown.”

This movie felt too real in what a society could be like when the wrong people get into power and pure anarachy occurs. It’s like if “The Purge” really happened and that’s such a scary thought. The best aspect of this film was watching Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny’s characters slowly morph into the other. I also enjoyed the ambition of the photojournalist and how those snapshots were depicted in the film. It was stunning.

“It’s What’s Inside” (Netflix)
Directed and Written by: Greg Jardin
Cast: Alycia Debnam-Carey, David Thompson, James Morosini, Brittany O’Grady, Nina Bloomgarden, Devon Terrell, Reina Hardesty, Gavin Leatherwood

“A group of friends gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires and grudges.”

Talk about a mind bending movie. I literally had to rewind and pause a few times during the movie just to get a minute to comprehend what was going on. It’s not that the film was hard to follow, but it was so trippy my mind could not quickly compute. All the lighting cues and editing made this movie so great. Highly recommend.

“Wicked”
Directed by: Jon M. Chu,
Written by: Winnie Holzman & Dana Fox
Cast: Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Bowen Yang, Andy Nyman

“Elphaba, a misunderstood young woman because of her green skin, and Galinda, a popular girl, become friends at Shiz University in the Land of Oz. After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads.”

It’s no question why this movie became the highest grossing musical movie adaptation to date. You could feel how special this movie was watching it. Everyone came to set and did what they needed to do to deliver an outstanding project. I’m still not sure what secret messages are hidden in this movie, “Josie and the Pussycats” style, because I’m obsessed. The music, the costumes, the sets, the performances…all of it was just so perfect. And to think now we can officially watch it from home.

“The Substance”
Directed and Written by: Coralie Fargeat
Cast: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid

“A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.”

I was already tapped in to this movie based on the concept, but the film surpassed my expectations. The ending fell a little flat, but I loved the commmentary on aging in the public eye, striving to be a better version of yourself, and insecurities all women face. Demi gave such a great performance making the award show season very tough this time around.
