The end of the month is upon us, but before we rang in a new year it’s time to look at the past 12 months and review the best of 2024. These forthcoming Glambergirlblog posts will break down my favorite films, music, TV shows, and pop culture moments of the year. Next, Best of 2024: The Pop Culture Moments That Lingered.

Kenergy Lives Forever
In what I’m sure will go down as one of the best moments in Oscars history, the “Barbie” era officially came to end (well, for now) in March at the 2024 Oscars. “I’m Just Ken” was nominated for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) so it was obvious that Ryan Gosling would perform the song, but it wasn’t obvious how iconic it would be. With a “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend” theme from “Gentleman Prefer Blondes,” Gosling and his herd of Ken’s brough Kenergy that left the audience gleefully on their feet. Although the Oscar went to Billie Elish and Finneas O’Connell for “What Was I Made For?,” the “I’m Just Ken” performance won our hearts.

Came All This Way for Domingo

Saturday Night Live is known for making viral sketches that viewers just can’t seem to get enough of and when you add Ariana Grande to the mix you know it’s bound to get attention. When Grande hosted SNL back in October, she performed in a sketch alongside cast members of the show as a group of bridesmaids singing a revealing song about a bachelorette trip. The sketch went viral for two reasons: the song in the sketch was sung to the tune of Sabrina Carpenter’s very popular song “Espresso” and a character Domingo (Marcello Hernandez). The sketch became so popular that fans of Carpenter insist on singing “Espresso” as the Domingo version and Marcello Hernandez even showed up in character at Sabrina’s Short n’ Sweet tour in LA. When he got wild applause I knew that SNL moment landed a spot in pop culture lore.

A Very Demure and Very Mindful Year

Over the summer a TikTok video went viral when creator Jools Lebron shared a clip of how she goes to work. The video shared how she wore modest and toned-down attire to work to appear demure and how she’s mindful about her appearance. The phrase caught the attention of pretty much everyone and opened a discussion about professional etiquette.

A First Date We All Swooned Over

A viral red carpet moment back in 2022 between Chicken Shop Date host and creator Amelia Dimoldenberg and Andrew Garfield led to a 2024 anticipated date on Dimoldenberg’s digital interview series back in October. The chemistry between Amelia and Andrew is undeniable and over 9 million (and counting) viewers agreed and swooned over what viewers coined the best rom com of the year.

Holding Space for the “Wicked” Press Tour

Glicked (“Wicked” and “Gladiator II”) was already making waves to being a pop culture moment with both of the anticipated films releasing on the same day in November, but it was the “Wicked” press tour that really stole the show. Stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were making headlines for becoming extremely emotional in pretty much every interview they did, but when they sat down with Out Magazine journalist Tracy Gilchrist a very iconic meme was born. Gilchrist insisted people were “holding space” for the lyrics of the song “Defying Gravity” from the film. In the moment Grande and Erivo responded in a way that made it seem they understood what Gilchrist meant, but it turns out there were as confused by the statement as those who watched the interview. “Wicked” part 1 press tour you will always be famous.

Will The Real Timothée Chalamet Please Stand Up

YouTuber Anthony Po brought back fun when he hosted a Timothée Chalamet lookalike event at Washington Square Park in New York. A huge crowd gathered for the unsanctioned event that cost Po a $500 fine from the NYPD, but the event brought so much joy to those who attended and watched via social media especially when Chalamet himself showed up to the event. This event sparked other lookalike attempts across the globe seeking to find doppelgangers for Paul Mescal, Zendaya, Harry Styles, Jeremy Allen White, Dev Patel, Glen Powell, Miles Teller, and Jalen Hurts, but none were as good as the original.

Thirsting For An Attractive Criminal

Time and time again I’m reminded of how deeply unserious and desensitized the internet is. Case in point, there’s a new object of lust and his name is Luigi Mangione. Mangione made headlines as the suspected shooter who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. To be honest I haven’t looked into many details about the case, but I’ve seen many conspiracy theorists and true crime enthusiasts share their opinions about the bizarre case. One thing for certain is the amount of attention Luigi has gained (mainly from women) because of how he looks, and the jokes and memes started from there. Again, we’re a deeply unserious people.
