Best of 2024: The Music That Stayed On Repeat

The end of the month is upon us, but before we rang in a new year it’s time to look at the past 12 months and review the best of 2024. These forthcoming Glambergirlblog posts will break down my favorite films, music, TV shows, and pop culture moments of the year. First up, Best of 2024: The Music That Stayed On Repeat.

Each year Spotify and Apple Music gives music lovers an in-depth breakdown of what they’ve been listening to all year long. I’m team Apple Music and my breakdown was and wasn’t accurate because my numbers were way off, but my top artists and songs were on point. I’m also a playlist girl, so I created an “On Repeat 2024” playlist that consisted of songs I simply could not stop listening to.

Fictional Artist Reign Supreme with “The Idea of You” and “Trap” Movie Soundtracks

I’m a sucker for a soundtrack and this year there were two that had me on lock. “The Idea of You” was an anticipated movie for me. When the Amazon Prime film starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine dropped in May I could hardly contain my excitement. The film follows the love affair between a single mother (Hathaway) and the lead singer (Galitzine) of the popular boy band August Moon. I loved the book the film is based on and while I was let down by the adaptation (It wasn’t as sexy as the book), I became obsessed with the music the film produced. With Nick Galitzine lending his vocals, songs like “Taste,” “Guard Down,” and “Closer” are boy band bops that stick with you.

Later on in the year, M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” was released starring Josh Hartnett and Ariel Donoghue as a father and daughter who attend the concert of Lady Raven (Saleka Night Shyamalan), but it’s an elaborate ploy to capture a killer. The plot of the film is all over the place, but it’s enjoyable for two key reasons: Hartnett’s portrayal of a calculated menace and Lady Raven! From the second “Don’t Wanna Be Yours” opened the credits I knew I would become a fan. The film is filled with original music mostly written and performed by Saleka and when I say that soundtrack has zero skips I mean it. To sum up my obsession, Saleka was my top artist on my Apple Music recap.

An eternal sunshine With Ariana Grande

I see Ariana Grande and I push play. Grande’s seventh studio album eternal sunshine dropped in March and featured 13 tracks, which later got extended with special remixes and live versions of the songs. Some of Grande’s songs are growers for me and this album was just that. Songs like “don’t wanna break up again,” “eternal sunshine,” and “true story” were immediate favs of mine but others like “supernatural” and “the boy is mine” needed repeated listens for me to get into it. Now eternal sunshine is in my top 3 of Grande’s albums.

A Victorious Listen to Leon Thomas’ Mutt

Leon Thomas always had a great voice to me. His work as Andre Harris on Nickelodeon’s Victorious is how I became familiar with him, and he has the perfect R&B voice. Not to mention he’s nice on the pen having written songs for Ariana Grande, Drake, Post Malone, J.Cole, and SZA (Earning him his first Grammy on “Snooze”). Mutt is Leon’s third studio album, which dropped in August, and seemed to be the charm that has gotten him much more musical attention. The title track on the album along with “FAR FETCHED,” “YES IT IS,” and “ANSWER YOUR PHONE” are my favorites on the album, but the entire body of work is worth taking a listen.

Billie Eilish HIT ME HARD AND SOFT With Her New Album

Three really is the magic number because Billie Eilish’s third studio album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT made me a fan. I wasn’t too familiar with Billie’s work as an artist and always stumbled upon her music if I happened to be listening to the radio, but for whatever reason I gave HIT ME HARD AND SOFT a listen a few months after it was released in May, and I was impressed. Billie really does have a beautiful voice and the work she does with her brother FINNEAS is music duo gold. The album is good, but “LUNCH,” “CHIHIRO,” and “BITTERSUITE” are my holy trinity.

Honorable Mentions: Jennifer Lopez’ This Is Me…Now and Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet

Say what you want about JLo, but she pumps out the hits for me. Her February This Is Me…Now album, with the accompanying music film, was filled with bops. I’m a hopeless romantic too so I was rooting for her epic love story and the songs on that album just fuel that fire.

I’m new to Sabrina Carpenter’s innuendo game and I find her delightful. She’s having fun with her music and her evolving career, and you can tell. Although there weren’t that many songs I vibed with on her Short n’ Sweet album, released in August, “Bed Chem” just does something to me and there’s no denying “Espresso” was the song of the summer, if not the year.
