Just like season one, the Tell Me Lies season two finale was filled with explosive reveals, set up more lies, and left me absolutely stunned and gagged! No more introduction needed, let’s get into it!
We’re back in 2015 and Lucy and Max are going at it in the pool with Stephen sipping a drink and watching! When they are finished Max gets out first and sees a text message from Stephen that says, “Thanks for the show.” Max quickly realizes Lucy planned all this and she tells him it was a joke trying to explain it away. Max’s reaction is understandable as he calls the entire situation disgusting and tells Lucy she still thinks she’s the victim. He leaves her in the pool looking dumb. I hope he leaves her for good this time.
It’s the day of the wedding and Bree is getting calls from a private number she’s avoiding. As the girls are getting ready, hair, makeup, and taking photos, Bree jokes about throwing the bouquet at Pippa or Diana and they also joke about Lucy and Diana’s past beef. Lucy gets a text from Stephen needing to see her and she meets him in her room. He proceeds to put her through the mattress as he’s known to do. They comment on how they both haven’t changed.
Things are picking up right where the last episode left off. Now in December 2008, moments after Lucy shut the door at end of episode 7, and it’s clear that Stephen and Lucy hooked up. Stephen tells Lucy that they are fit and she’s having regrets about hooking up with him. He leaves to do work after Lucy says she needs to get ready for an exam. Lucy angrily rips off her sex sheets and tries to call Bree and Pippa. They don’t answer. She gets dressed and goes to Leo’s. I wonder if Bree or Pippa answered the phone would Lucy have made the stupid move of going to see Leo. Meanwhile Bree is in class freaking out because Marianne has on her earrings. She calls Oliver and he tells her to meet him at the loft.
At Leo’s dorm room, Lucy cries to him about being the best thing that happened to her and she messed everything up between them. Leo, looking so fine, wants to give Lucy another chance but he needs to know she’s over Stephen. Umm, no! She JUST banged him. Lucy tells Leo she loves him, and he says it back. Like Leo, PLEASE be for real. But Leo is all in. Lucy and Leo begin making out. Leo wants to have sex and Lucy is giving pause. I mean she did JUST have sex with Stephen, and she could have said not right now babe, but she proceeds to do it anyway.
Pippa is with Wrigley after his meltdown and gets a message. It’s from Diana and she goes outside to meet her. Diana gets a message and says, “He’ll be here soon.” We find out who that “He” is in a bit. Diana wants to talk about Lucy lying about something happening with Chris saying it was messed up. Pippa wants to move past it and questions Diana being with Stephen knowing how nuts he is. They agree they shouldn’t commit on each other’s relationships, but the drags don’t end there. Pippa tells Diana she doesn’t care about other people and that she doesn’t need to keep inserting herself in what happened with her and Chris. Diana says none of this would be happening if she spoke up in the first place. Which is a difficult to do, Diana needs to understand that. They part ways and Diana gets a notification that the “He” arrived. It’s Drew. Thank God, because Wrigley needs to see his brother. My man is falling apart.
Drew goes to Wrigley’s dorm room, and they have a much-needed talk. Diana is the reason Drew came because she strongly insisted. Wrigley apologizes for telling Pippa about Drew’s involvement with Macy’s death. Mind you, they still think Pippa is responsible for sending the letter to the school telling them to look into Drew’s involvement which in turn ruined his life. Drew and Wrigley seem to patch up their riff and they make plans to go get drinks.
At the apartment Oliver and Bree go to for hook ups, Oliver says he told Marianne Bree’s earrings were a gift because she found them in Oliver’s pants pocket. Bree explains she left them because she wants more and maybe if she found them it would make Marianne want to leave her marriage. Oliver tells Bree he’s not leaving Marianne, and they need to end things because she wants more than he’ll ever give her. Bree is upset and Oliver tells her she can stay as long as she needs, but he’s going to need her keys. He apologizes again for the break up and leaves.
Lucy and Leo are cuddled up post sex and Stephen keeps calling. Leo tells Lucy there’s a Christmas party at Woodsley later and they should go. Obviously, Lucy doesn’t want to be out and about, but she agrees to go. Lucy leaves to go get showered and changed. In Diana’s dorm room Stephen is packing up his things when she enters. He sits her down and is breaking up with her. Stephen puts on his fake sincere voice trying to convince Diana how sorry he is and Diana sees through the bullshit and calls him out on it. The WAY Stephen’s face shifted in this moment was actually so scary. He’s dropping the act. Diana tells him he wanted to be with her when she was impressive but now that she’s showing weakness he’s out. Yeah girl. Stephen basically agrees with her and leaves.
At a bar Wrigley and Drew are throwing back beers. Wrigley offers Drew a painkiller he uses for his leg and Drew takes half for now. They talk about girls and Stephen and Drew convinces Wrigley to leave a heartfelt message to the girl he’s into. We know that girl is Pippa. At the Christmas party, Lucy and Leo walk in but she’s looking over her shoulder trying to avoid running into Stephen. Evan and Stephen enter the party, Stephen is texting Lucy asking why she’s not answering the phone, and Evan comments on wanting to call Bree. Stephen promptly sees Lucy and Leo together and knows he’s about to screw things up. Evan comments on not knowing Lucy and Leo were back together and Stephen tells him they aren’t because they had sex that morning. Stephen makes his way over to them.
Evan tries to intervene, but Stephen goes over anyway. Stephen wants to talk to Lucy alone, but she refuses. Evan pulls Stephen away saying he doesn’t need to start anything while Leo is looking like “I wish you would.” Evan and Stephen are set to leave when Stephen makes a U-turn back to Leo and Lucy. He fake apologies and offers Leo a handshake. Leo and Lucy get up to leave the party and leave the situation when Stephen does what he always does. Talks in that antagonizing tone to goad Leo and IT WORKED. Stephen tells Leo he had sex with Lucy that morning and describes her panties to him then asks him how his semen tasted. OMG. My jaw dropped because why would Stephen say that. I mean I know WHY, he’s a sick sicko, but that was so foul. This was the thing that made Leo SNAP and it’s exactly what Stephen wanted. He beats Stephen to a pulp! It’s definitely built-up hate there because this is the second time Stephen had Leo’s girl. But that beat down was exactly what Stephen deserved! Leo they can’t make me hate your fine face ever!
Bree is still in the love nest and calls Oliver. She wants to talk. He calls her over to his home and insists Marianne is in class all day. They have sex and after Oliver takes a shower. Bree peruses Marianne’s things while Oliver is in the shower when she hears the front door open. Bree is freaking out knowing it’s Marianne and quickly tries to get dress. When Marianne comes in the bedroom, Bree apologizes, but Marianne tells her to calm down and that she’s sorry. WHAT?! Marianne goes to talk to Oliver in the bathroom privately. Bree is confused like me at the moment. Then she leaves them to talk. Oliver reveals he wasn’t truthful and that he has an open marriage. This show is called TELL ME LIES. Everyone be lying. Marianne knew about Bree from the beginning and Oliver and Marianne have had pillow talk about her. Bree is very upset. She says she would not have agreed to the arrangement if she knew the truth and feels blindsided. Before exiting the house Marianne and Bree have a talk. Marianne questions if Bree would have preferred if she was a clueless wife versus a participant. The girls exchange more words. Bree tells Marianne that Oliver told her he loved her, and Marianne basically tells Bree she’s not new to this she’s true to this and hands Bree her earrings and wipes away tears. This got messy fast. But I’m wondering about Oliver and Marianne. Since they have this open marriage I wonder if that apartment is their shared place to take their lovers.
In the dorms Pippa and Lucy are drinking beers as Lucy gives the rundown of how Leo beat Stephen’s ass. Lucy asks Pippa if they are ok when Bree comes in the room crying. She presumably fills them both in. Now things get super sad. In Wrigley’s room he wakes from a night of drinking next to Drew on the couch. He reaches for a water bottle and notices it has vomit on it. Wrigley rolls over Drew to find him covered in vomit, lips blue, and dead. I broke down at this point. It was obvious Drew died from the way he was talked about in season 1, but the mystery of how was still in the air. I was thinking it would have been suicide, but this was somehow worst. Wrigley already feels so responsible for everything Drew has been going through and now this. He’s going to forever blame himself and that’s seriously tragic. Stephen walks back to campus and see an ambulance truck. Meanwhile, Pippa and Lucy comfort Bree’s heartbreak when Pippa gets a call from Wrigley and Lucy gets a call from Stephen about what happened to Drew. The gang meets at Evan’s when Wrigley tells them his parents are on the way and that Drew probably died from the combination of the time-release painkillers he was taking and drinking. Evan tries to convince Wrigley it’s not his fault and Lucy is feeling very guilty because it was the letter she sent that was a catalyst for all the recent events. Lucy wants to confess, not the right time dumb dumb, and says she can’t live with this, but Stephen says she has to. She begins to confess but Stephen takes the blame and says he wrote the letter. Wrigley forgives him and Lucy can’t believe he took the fall for her. Stephen says it’s because he loves her.
It’s one week later and Diana runs into Pippa while getting coffee. Diana asks how Wrigley is doing, and Pippa says she doesn’t know how he’ll bounce back. They wish each other a good Christmas. Pippa is in her room listening to the message Wrigley left her on repeat professing his love. Lucy returns the notes she was transcribing for Marianne, and they have a run in. Marianne says Lucy shouldn’t be in anymore of her classes moving forward and that she was relieved Oliver didn’t meet Lucy first. I’m still not sure what this means. That Marianne would have been jealous if Oliver and Lucy hooked up or that she’s glad she could have Lucy as a mentee and it wouldn’t have been awkward cause she was banging her husband.
Evan and Lucy run into each other and asks about the older guy Bree has been seeing. Lucy tells him it’s over and that relationship really messed her up and that it’s all their fault Bree is in the predicament. Now to the biggest got cha moment. Diana is meeting with an advisor who tells her because of her phenomenal LSAT score and an admissions essay she has a perfect shot at an early admission to Yale. Then Diana is on the phone with the bank talking a hold off her card that SHE put on it. Remember it was declined during a dinner with Stephen and he thought Diana’s dad cut her off. Soon Diana’s dad pulls up to take her home for the holiday break and they embrace. He asks how the breakup with Stephen went and she says he’ll be alright and that she had to make him think it was his idea. D was playing chess the whole time. She knew the kind of man Stephen was and knew he would only leave her alone if he couldn’t get nothing from her. I’ve never been prouder of her.
Evan is in class, and it’s revealed that Oliver is his professor! If Evan only knew. Bree, Pippa, and Lucy then takes bats to Oliver’s car. Go on girls, bust them windows out. In Stephen’s room, Evan ask if he’s serious about Lucy and Stephen tells him it always was. So Evan being an idiot and feeling the high from Stephen “confessing” to Wrigley, confides in Stephen that Lucy was the girl he cheated on Bree with. Stephen is stunned and says he needs to get air. Needing air in Stephen language means he needs time to plan his lick back. While outside smoking he runs into Lydia. She’s there to help Chris pack up and she says she regrets what she said to Stephen and that’s she’s sorry for giving him shit. She can’t trust Lucy and doesn’t believe what she was saying about Stephen. Stephen says maybe he’ll see Lydia around. Obviously in his mind he’s thinking a friend for a friend. Lucy slept with Evan and he’s about to one up her and get with Lydia. He then does something on his phone.
I already knew Stephen was recording Evan before he got back in the room. Even the way Stephen was talking to Evan made it seem like he was trying to get a full confession, and he got it. Evan is begging for forgiveness and Stephen says he can move past it, and he won’t ruin Evan’s life “today” by telling Bree. WHY do these people insist on keep telling Stephen important information. Back in 2015 and it’s wedding time. Lucy looks pleased that she got with Stephen as they dress after their romp. It’s moments before Bree is set to walk down the aisle and Lucy is looking around the room for Stephen. She runs into Wrigley first and he says he has to drop his crush on Pippa seeing her with Diana. Lucy goes to check on Bree and has a brief encounter with Diana. She tells her it’s scary when you don’t know where Stephen is meaning you never know what this creep is up to.
Lucy goes to see Bree, who looks stunning. When taking one last look in the mirror, Bree gets a message from Stephen which is the audio recording of Evan confessing to cheating on Bree with Lucy. TODAY was the day Stephen wanted to ruin Evan’s life. Lucy comes and stands behind Bree and asks if she’s ready and the episode ENDS! There are so many levels to this moment. The idea that Stephen held on to that recording and grudge for this long is insane! He really waited for the best moment for his revenge, and I hate to say it, but his mind is great. Like who thinks of something like that. But with Bree, that cheat happened so long ago, would she still be upset about it now? She knows the type of man Stephen is and how he does things that benefits him in the long run. It is upsetting to have two people smiling in your face this whole time knowing what they did, but I don’t think I’d want to give Stephen the satisfaction of an extreme reaction. How do you fake a good mood through a wedding after that? I don’t know. I just hope we’ll get the chance to see what happens next.
And just like the season one finale I’m still left with more questions after watching season two. How did Evan and Bree end up getting back together and on the road to marriage. How did Max and Lucy rekindle their relationship? What did Stephen say to Lydia to get her interested in a relationship with him? What events transpired for Diana and Pippa to hook up? Who was Bree talking to during her wedding festivities? And Will Bree beat Lucy’s ass after the message Stephen sent her? So many questions, but one of the biggest things I’m curious about is Stephen capable of love? Does he want it? He seems to keep doing a bunch of stuff that pushes the people who care about him away. What’s his end game? I also think Lucy and Stephen like this game they keep playing. Everyone is a pawn and disposable to them, and they truly get off on the mayhem and chaos.
Shout out to the writers, cast, and creator for delivering an outstanding season that evoked so much emotion from its fans. The comments on Twitter have left me rolling all season long. Special shout out to Jackson White because HE IS Stephen DeMarco. His performance left me in awe, especially in that final episode. The way he conveys his psychotic nature so well and so believable in his demeanor, his voice, his FACE! It’s excellent. He’s a marvel. Again, I hope this show gets renewed because I’m seated forever for more lies!
