The baddies at Baird college are taking control of their narrative in the third episode of Tell Me Lies season two. Welcome back to my weekly recap/commentary of Tell Me Lies season two and while this new episode wasn’t that exciting there was still plenty to dissect. Let’s get into it.
The episode opens in August 2015 where Bree and Evan are having a joint bachelor/ bachelorette party. Each episode we’re going closer to the wedding and I just know some shit is going to go down there. Lucy arrives with Max and you clearly sees she’s uncomfortable. Stephen is there so Lucy is really on edge. He’s being extra nice, talking to Max, and taking an interest in Lucy’s writing, she’s currently working at a travel agency. Lucy tells Max she doesn’t have to be so nice to him and responds with maybe he’s changed from the dick he was in college. Pippa later has a moment with Lucy saying guys like him never change. Pippa also has a moment with Diana on Facetime while out on a smoking break from the party wishing she was there. Clearly this relationship is more serious than teased when it was first revealed they were hooking up.
Back in 2008 at college, Lucy is irked about Stephen being a TA for her class and he insists it was all coincidence. Of course, we the audience knows different further fueling his menacing agenda. We see the aftermath of Bree and professor Oliver making out and they plan to meet later to discuss what’s happening between them. Diana is having a conversation with her mom in the next scene while trying to get some work done. Her mom is very dependent on her dad and gets belittled by him. Diana tries to calm her down after recent events between them makes her mom want to leave the marriage. While looking at the shirt she used to cover Pippa being blacked out drunk at the party the other day she wants to check on her. When doing so Pippa calls out Diana for being fake concerned although I think Diana was really disturbed by what happened and is genuinely showing care.
Pippa is still not dealing with what happened to her at the party and it’s causing a riff between the puswa girls. Bree knows something is up when Chris approaches Pippa, Lucy, and herself while having coffee. The vibe is weird and no one is talking about it. Everyone gets caught up on the Bree/Evan break up and Wrigley insists on being a wing man for Evan helping him get “pussy” since he hasn’t been single his entire college experience.
Later fine ass Leo tries to explain his violent outburst to Lucy, but she’s not ready to hear anymore foolishness from toxic men right now. In the cafe Pippa calls out the football team for being dicks to her and especially Wrigley for allowing it to happen and not saying anything. I was very proud of Pippa in this moment because everyone needs to fuck all the way off about this situation. Good for her. Diana also spoke up in that moment to Wrigley co-signing Pippa’s drag. Wrigley later apologies to Pippa and the two seem to begin mending whatever riff they had.
Let me start by saying that I love Bree. She was the only character is season one that didn’t get on my nerves and she can do no wrong, but this affair with the teacher is a bit boring to me. Maybe because I don’t feel any chemistry between the two, but they basically set up ground rules for their affair. Oliver is not leaving his wife and he doesn’t want Bree to get hurt aka catch feelings. She agrees and they later have sex at a place Oliver is house sitting for. Boring.
Diana accidentally erases an important paper from her laptop and Stephen offers to write it for her because she doesn’t have the time to do it over. Yeah, that’s going to come back to haunt her. Pippa and Lucy have a scene in episode three where they are smoking and Lucy asks Pippa why did she dye her hair blonde – Pippa wanted a fresh start – , then rants about the toxic men she keeps attracting telling her about Leo headbutting a guy then trying to apologize. Pippa at least appreciated Leo owned up to his mistake.
Later Stephen pulls a Stephen when he finds Lucy’s id in Diana’s bag after completing her paper. He freaks asking why does she have. We know it’s from the night of the party with Pippa. Diana lies and says Lucy came at her on campus and she must have dropped it. That gives Stephen ammo to act a fool like he always does. He goes to Lucy’s dorm to return the id and asks what happened between Diana and Lucy trying to get the story straight. He basically attempts to seduce her, getting all up in her face, unbuttoning her jeans, and tells her she doesn’t really hate him before stopping and telling her this is embarrassing for her. If Stephen didn’t stop, Lucy would have let him do anything he wanted. Like GIRL, come on. Are you finished or are you done with him? STAND UP!
Realizing her mess up Lucy tried to regain power over the Stephen situation and goes tell Diana about everything that went down with Stephen and Macy last year. Diana doesn’t believe Lucy and finally her frontal lobe is starting to form and Lucy realizes she no longer has to entertain any of these idiots. She drops out of the class Stephen is TA-ing, although it’s going to mess up her credits, and goes to talk to Leo. He explains his anger issues, Lucy talks about how crazy Stephen made her last year, and they resolve that they want to continue dating. Before the episode ends Diana questions if she really knows Stephen better than anyone and it’s obvious what Lucy said is putting some doubt about Stephen in her head. He distracts her with sex, but I’m sure this won’t be the last time this comes up.
Overall, solid third episode. No major revelations, but I’m still very invested in this show and excited to see how the drama will unfold.
