It’s been three years but the games are about to begin again with the second season of Netflix’s Emmy winning series Squid Game dropping in December. The show, which premiered in 2021 on the streaming service, was created by director, writer, and executive producer of the show Hwang Dong-hyuk and follows hundreds of desperate for money individuals who compete in a series of children’s games vying to be the last player standing to take home the huge cash prize.
In 2023, Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition based on the show, was released to wild reception and another season in the works. The world of the Squid Game series however will come to a conclusion next year with a third and final season announced. A letter from Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed the news.
“It’s been almost three years since Season 1 was met with incredible response around the world and many unimaginable events took place. I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season,” Dong-hyuk wrote.
He also teased the plot of the new season and how the show could end. “I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story. We’ll do our best to make sure we bring you yet another thrill ride. I hope you’re excited for what’s to come. Thank you, always, and see you soon, everyone.”
Squid Game season 2 comes to Netflix on December 26, 2024. The final season is coming in 2025.
