The R&B stars have aligned indeed and while Ariana Grande‘s “the boy is mine (Remix)” with Brandy and Monica is not exactly what I was hoping for, the more and more I listen to it the more I’m happy with what it is.

Ariana Grande released the music video for “the boy is mine,” her third single off Eternal Sunshine, on Friday, June 7 which featured Brandy and Monica in the video as news casters. Their cameo got fans speculating about a remix especially with the way Grande switched up her vocals on the hit track when she performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. A few weeks later “the boy is mine (Remix)” with Brandy and Monica was released.

Brandy opens the track with her sultry signature vocals with no changes to the lyrics with Grande taking the undertones. There are some slight changes in the chorus reminiscent of the original “The Boy Is Mine,” but subtle. Monica takes on the second verse with her edgier vocals then all the ladies are joined on a revised bridge which I would have LOVED if the beat switched to the 1998 song. I would have lost my mind.

Overall, I did enjoy the remix. I liked the attempts at trying to give fans a new and revamped track. I think I still prefer Ariana’s original track, but the remix is a vibe.
