For those excited to see “Wicked” for the first time this fall the official trailer may have given away the full story, but those who are familiar with the Broadway show having the opportunity to see the beloved musical adapted on screen has them belting “Defying Gravity,” a pinnacle song in the story, with the release of the official trailer.

“Wicked” tells the untold story of the witches of Oz with Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning starlet Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, “a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power,” and Grammy-winning pop superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, “a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart,” leading the cast.

The plot of “Wicked” follows Elphaba and Glinda meeting as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forging an unlikely but profound friendship. When they have an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths with them ultimately fulfilling their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Chu as the director and adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman.

This will be my first time seeing anything “Wicked” related, but I love how passionate everyone was about bringing this story to life and how this is literally a dream come true for Cynthia and Ariana. I already know all their emotions are going to be palpable through the screen.

“Wicked” part one is expected to premiere in theaters November 27, 2024 with the second installment coming November 26, 2025.
