‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Renewed For Second 2 on Prime Video Season One Leads Donald Glover & Maya Erskine Not Expected to Star

Let me start by saying I didn’t see the 2005 film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie until this year. I was fully aware of the plot and impact the film had on pop culture, but I just didn’t think it was my type of film since I tend to steer away from action-esque films. I watched it after I watched the Prime Video series of the same name starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and I must say I loved them both, but I enjoyed the altered concept of the Mr. & Mrs. Smith series more.

In the Mr. & Mrs. Smith Prime Video series, which premiered the full 8-episode season in early February, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play two strangers who land jobs at a spy agency and offered a luxurious yet dangerous life of espionage, wealth, and travel where they must assume new identities in an arranged marriage as John and Jane Smith, they comply. What I really liked about this show is how unlike the film, John and Jane are aware they their spouse is a spy and work together in joint missions. Paul Dano, Parker Posey, Wagner Moura, Alexander Skarsgård, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Michaela Coel, Eiza González, Sarah Paulson served as guest stars in season one.

The success of the series has lead Amazon MGM Studios to renew the show for a second season. During the inaugural upfront Prime Video presentation in New York on Tuesday, May 14, the announcement was made. Head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke said, “We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers. The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, sexy reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesa Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”

Showrunner Francesca Sloane is expected to return but the show’s first season stars Glover and Erskine are not, which is unfortunate given how the ending of the first season went. Hopefully we’ll get some conclusion on that happened to them and it’ll be like the beginning of season one where we saw the demise of a John and Jane Smith then were introduced to a new couple. I like the idea of introducing a new John and Jane each season. That will keep the show very interesting.
