The home invasion subgenre of horror films is always interesting because there are only so many different ways you can reinvent the concept. With the “The Strangers” franchise I’m curious to see how they plan on doing it.
In “The Strangers” (2008) Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler played a couple staying at an isolated vacation home who get attacked by three assailants simply because they were home. In “The Strangers: Prey at Night” (2018) the concept got a little different with a family played by Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, and Lewis Pullman being stalked at a mobile home park. Now in “The Strangers: Chapter 1” it seems Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez will become victims at a cabin like in the first film.
When their car breaks down in an eerie small town, Maya and Ryan (Petsch and Gutierrez) seek shelter at a remote cabin. Soon their peaceful domain becomes a nightmare when they are terrorized by three masked strangers. It’s giving very much the first film and the trailer doesn’t have anything too different from the concept of the original, so are the leading actors enough to get people in the theater to see this one?
“The Strangers: Chapter 1” comes to theaters on May 17, 2024.
