‘Madame Web’ Isn’t As Bad As People Are Saying It Is [REVIEW]

It’s been a little over a week since “Madame Web” premiered in theaters. Early reviews for the film trashed the latest Marvel/Sony film and when it was released to the masses on February 14 the discourse continued as movie lovers complained about how much they didn’t enjoy the film, but is it as bad as people are saying it is? I don’t think so.

I tend to stay away from reviewing and writing about comic book-based films because I know they have a demographic that’s immensely dedicated to the genre and know the backstories of the material of the films before even entering the theater. I know this genre of film is not my expertise. With that being said I loved the “X-Men” movies back in the day and it took the “Guardians of the Galaxy” and a pandemic for me to get interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, MCU, so I went into “Madame Web” to have fun at the theaters. During an early screening last week, I saw “Madame Web” and I thought it was an OK movie.

Directed by SJ Clarkson, Dakota Johnson stars in the movie as Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future. Cassie soon sees this gift as a way to change the future especially when she has visions of three girls being murdered by a spider-like villain. Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor play the three girls and Tahar Rahim plays the villain Ezekiel Sims. Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott also appear in the film.

“Madame Web” is based on Marvel Comics, but doesn’t align with other films in the MCU. It serves as an origin story so you don’t need any previous knowledge of Marvel going into this but there are clear Spider-Man Easter eggs although that name is never explicitly said. There’s also a severe lack of action in this one which is the appealing aspect of comic book movies for me. The line delivery was also a negatively talked about element of the film, but if we’re keeping it real a lot of dialogue in these types of movies is cheesy and questionable along with the timelines so that didn’t deter my interest in “Madame Web.”

The biggest downfall of this movie is that we didn’t get to see the trio of girls get their superpowers and see them in their spider costumes more. Those few moments of them on the screen showing off their powers were so exciting so if this story continues the story needs to lean more into that. This movie really wasn’t as bad as what people are saying. Just go into it looking to have fun and laugh because if you don’t take the movie too serious and embrace the flaws you’ll enjoy it.

“Madame Web” is playing now in theaters.
