Hulu’s latest film “Self Reliance” takes an interesting approach to self-reflection and what it means to live in the present. Written and directed by Jake Johnson, “Self Reliance” premiered on the streaming service on Friday, January 12.
Johnson plays Tommy, a lonely guy going through the motions of life and struggling through a breakup while living back at home with his mom Laurie (Nancy Lenehan). One day Tommy is approached by Andy Samberg, yes the real Andy Samberg, and receives an invitation to play a twisted game on the dark web. To win $1 million he must outwit hunters attempting to kill him for 30 days and the hunters can only attack him when he’s alone.
Tommy seeks help from his family played by Mary Holland, Emily Hampshire, and Daryl J. Johnson, but none of them believe him. Biff Wiff, Anna Kendrick, and Eduardo Franco also play characters important in Tommy’s journey.
The film opens with a quote attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson that reads: “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else, is the greatest accomplishment.” That quote guides the movie as Tommy proves no matter the circumstances or your age in life you can always rediscover yourself and push the refresh button on life.
I found the concept of the film interesting when I saw the trailer so I marked it on my calendar. It was funnier and deeper than I imagined it to be. There were moments where it seemed the actors broke character and that made the moments more hilarious. The movie did however end on a lackluster note. There was all this build-up to see if Tommy would survive the 30 days and then it kind of ended. It was a still good watch though.
“Self Reliance” is streaming now on Hulu.
