Ariana Grande is entering a new era of music and she’s saying it with her chest. On Friday, January 12 Ari dropped “yes, and?,” the first single from the anticipated seventh album from the pop star.
It’s clear to hear the influence “yes, and?” was inspired by. It’s an amalgamation of Madonna’s “Vogue,” Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul,” and other songs that fit that genre. On the track, Ariana sings about self-love, being yourself un-apologetically, and people needing to mind their own damn business.
The visual for “yes, and?” is an homage to Paula Abdul’s 1988 “Cold Hearted” as she dances for critics in a warehouse. I must admit I wanted something different from Ariana. She’s released dance-pop tracks like this before though with “Be Alright,” “Break Free,” and “no tears left to cry,” but for a first single introducing a new era of music, I did not move. This will have to be a song that grows on me for sure.
