Here’s Why Abby and Riley Should Have Been Endgame in Hulu’s ‘Happiest Season’

When I first saw “Happiest Season” when it was released in 2020 I liked it for many reasons. One key reason is that Kristen Stewart was starring in the movie and I love Kristen. Came for her and ended up really enjoying the film.

Directed by Clea DuVall (co-written along with Mary Holland), “Happiest Season” serves as one of the few holiday films with a same-sex couple as the lead and follows Harper (Mackenzie Davis) bringing her girlfriend Abby (Stewart) home for the holidays, but she hasn’t come out to her conservative family and wants Abby to “play straight” as well until she can come out. The subject matter hit hard to those in the LGBTQ+ community with similar stories, but there are many highlights in the film that balance the hard parts out. Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, Alison Brie, Mary Holland, Dan Levy, Aubrey Plaza, and Ana Gasteyer all starred in “Happiest Season.”

Throughout the film, typical rom-com hijinks occur with sibling rivalry, Abby and Harper almost getting caught, their relationship being put to the test, and then ultimately having a resolution that pushes their relationship forward. I don’t personally know the struggles of being in the LGBTQ+ community or having to hide a key part of myself, especially from family, but I know being treated like a secret doesn’t feel good and that’s my main issue with Harper and how she treated Abby. At her BIG age she should have, how do you kids say today, stood on business for herself and her girl.

Now let’s talk about Riley! She clearly understood firsthand what it was like to be in love with Harper and not receive that love back publicly just like Abby. Not to mention Abby and Riley had more chemistry in the few scenes that had together than Abby and Harper combined and Riley was more considerate of Abby’s feelings only having just met her. Plus that “Must Be Santa” scene lives in my mind rent free.

Harper got it together with Abby in the end but I don’t like how it took someone threatening their relationship for it to happen. Riley and Abby should have left that family in the dust.

If you saw “Happiest Season” what do you think? Should Abby and Riley have run off together? Share your thoughts in the comments.
