Back in 2021, everyone couldn’t stop talking about Netflix’s international phenomenon series Squid GameWritten and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the 9-episode series, which got renewed for a second season, followed 456 players facing extreme financial hardships competing in children’s games for the opportunity to win $45.6 billion. The Korean drama earned 6 Primetime Emmys and is one of Netflix’s most successful shows to date. (Spoilers ahead)

The streaming service took the series a step further and created a reality show competition that mimicked the scripted show closely. In Squid Game: The Challenge, which premiered November 22, 456 players gathered for the chance to win $4.56 million. For 10 episodes players participated in games like “Red Light, Green Light,” “Dalgona,” “War,” “Marbles” and more while contestants were eliminated along the way.

Squid Game: The Challenge faced some backlash for the blatant disregard of the serious issues the scripted show posed, but I’m sorry this reality show was very entertaining. Watching the players scheme and plot to ensure they were the final player in the game was engaging in a way I didn’t expect to be so invested in. A high-tension season led to a lackluster finale where two players played a game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors” to determine who would take home the grand prize.

On December 6, Player 287 aka Mai Whelan was crowned the season 1 winner of Squid Game: The Challenge. When the show ended a surprising announcement revealed a second season is already in the works and viewers could apply if they think they have what it takes to win Squid Game. While a new season would interesting I’m wondering if players would play the same games or will new ones and tests be introduced. We’ll see.

Were you happy with who won the first season of Squid Game: The Challenge? Are you going to apply for season two? Share your thoughts in the comments.
