The holiday season is always bittersweet for me and I’m sure it’s the same for many people. That feeling of nostalgia and getting together with family is joyous, but there’s often a sadness associated with the holiday season that comes from loved ones no longer around or the feeling of isolation. I’m the type of person who sees the value of a good cry. Sometimes you just need it and holiday movies bring out some of the biggest cries I’ve had.

Below are some of my favorite holiday tearjerkers to watch that you should check out.

“The Family Stone” (2005)

In “The Family Stone,” Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) goes home with her boyfriend Everett (Dermot Mulroney) during the holidays to spend time with his eccentric family the Stones. His parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) and his siblings Amy (Rachel McAdams), Ben (Luke Wilson), Thad (Tyrone Giordano), and Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser). Everything that could go wrong does, but throughout the film, we start to learn something more serious is happening with Sybil. Get your tissues ready for the gift-giving scene. (Watch on Hulu, FX Now)

“Jack Frost” (1998)

What could be more Christmas than a snowman coming to life? In “Jack Frost,” Jack Frost (Michael Keaton) is the leader of a rock band who rarely follows through for his family, his son Charlie (Joseph Cross) and his wife Gabby (Kelly Preston). Sadly Jack is killed in a car crash but magically comes back to life in the form of a snowman one year later giving Charlie and Jack a chance to make amends. Anytime I hear “Sing me a smile Jack” I lose it. (Watch on Hulu, Max, AMC+)

“The Best Man Holiday” (2013)

Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Harold Perrineau, Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Monica Calhoun, Melissa De Sousa, and Regina Hall all returned to reprise their roles in the sequel to the film “The Best Man.” In “The Best Man Holiday” it’s been years since the college friends have spent any time together and are gathering at Lance and Mia’s (Chestnut and Calhoun) beautiful home to celebrate the holidays together. This movie had such an unexpected heartbreaking twist but still remains a pretty great sequel to a beloved franchise. (Watch on Peacock)

“To Grandmother’s House We Go” (1992)

Now this pick is very personal to me and that’s why it’s a tearjerker. In “To Grandmother’s House We Go,” single mom Rhonda (Cynthia Geary) is having a hard time balancing work, her personal life, and her often mischievous twin daughters Sarah and Julie (Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen). The girls overhear their overwhelmed mom and decide to give her a break this holiday season by traveling to Edgemont to visit great grandma Mimi. They get kidnapped along the way and a bunch of other things happen, but I LOVED Mary-Kate and Ashley growing up and everything about this movie makes me emotional. The music, seeing the twins so young, and the Christmas theme. (Watch on AMC+)
