“How did we get here?” Time sure flies even when you’re a vampire. Back on November 21, 2008, the first “Twilight” film came to theaters. Based on the Twilight novel by Stephenie Meyer, Melissa Rosenberg wrote the screenplay and Catherine Hardwicke directed the first film in the saga. Four of Stephenie Meyer’s books from her Twilight series went on to become a pop culture phenomenon that spanned five films and made Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner the talk of the town during a spike in their careers.
The premise of “Twilight” was simple. Bella Swan (Stewart) moves to Forks, Washington to live with her dad Charlie (Billy Burke) when her mom Renee (Sarah Clarke) and stepdad Phil (Matt Bushell) decide to go on the road to support his minor league baseball career. Bella meets Edward Cullen (Pattinson) and soon discovers he’s a 108-year-old vampire, but the pair fall in love anyway. Then drama sparks as Bella and Edward try to find the balance of their worlds.
Vampire craze took over, but there’s nothing quite like the first film. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the film’s release, below are 15 Moments to relive “Twilight.”
The Soundtrack
Whether you liked the “Twilight” films or not you have to admit it collected some of the best songs to contribute to the soundtracks. Some of the songs featured in the first film are “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse, “Decode” by Paramore, “Flightless Bird, American Mouth” by Iron & Wine, and “Leave Out All the Rest” by LINKIN PARK. Robert Pattinson even recorded two songs for the soundtrack; “Let Me Sign” is my favorite. These songs really set the vibe for “Twilight” and opened me up to new artists.
The Score
The music for “Twilight” was also a highlight in the film. Although the score for “Twilight” isn’t available to stream you can still appreciate the work Carter Burwell did for the film when watching. “The Lion Fell In Love With The Lamb,” “I Dreamt of Edward,” “Edward at Her Bed,” “Dinner With His Family,” and of course “Bella’s Lullaby” are my favorites.
“Twilight” Movie Commentary
I can’t remember the first film commentary I listened to, but I can remember my favorites, and “Twilight” is one of them. One of the DVD extras of “Twilight” is a commentary of the film with director Catherine Hardwicke, Robert Pattinson, and Kristen Stewart. The trio can be heard as they’re watching the film revealing behind-the-scenes tidbits. It was at this moment I realized how funny and unserious Rob is.
All The Iconic Lines
“You better hold on tight, spider monkey,” “How you likin’ the rain, girl” or “cat.” There are so many lines that come to mind when thinking about the “Twilight” saga as a whole, but it’s some of the simplest lines from the first film that stand out the most.
Vampire Baseball
From the moment that first guitar riff starts in Muse’s “Supermassive Black Hole” viewers knew history was being made. This moment is cinema. Enough said.
Falling For Forks, Washington
One of my biggest goals in life is to travel to Washington, head to Forks, and go on a “Twilight” tour. I love dreary, overcast weather and Washington is filled with it at certain points. Seeing “Twilight” depicted on screen doesn’t compare to the others. It’s like this blue tinge to it, the actors are so young, and it’s really shot like an indie flick. How could you not fall for Forks.
Bad Lip Reading of “Twilight”
All big things in pop culture get parodied at some point and when “Twilight” was released all types of sketches and bits came out poking fun at the film. One of my favorites, while doing a deep dive of YouTube trying to find any and everything I could related to “Twilight,” was the Bad Lip Reading page. The channel takes clips from viral moments and adds their own voiceover to them. I found it hilarious.
Best Kiss MTV Movie Awards
Back when the MTV Movie & TV Awards was just the MTV Movie Awards, the “Best Kiss” award was like being up for an Oscar and fandoms anxiously waited to see if their favorite ship won and what they would do on stage. “Twilight” swept each year they were nominated, but the first time they won sent Twihards into a frenzy due to Rob and Kristen’s real-life couple status being a tabloid headline every other month.
The Wolves Descend
We didn’t get much of Taylor’s Jacob Black in “Twilight,” but the glimpse of his 14-inch bust down was enough to get viewers excited about the upcoming arrival of the wolves and all those beautiful scenes down on La Push beach.
Pawnee Goes to Forks
I knew I really liked Parks and Recreation by the end of season 1 but I knew I officially LOVED the show when I watched episode 3, season 3 “Time Capsule.” It follows a Pawnee resident Kelly Larson (Will Forte) obsessed with “Twilight” and wants the book placed in the city’s time capsule. The storyline that follows is very “dope.”
Billy and Bella’s Bond
I’m a sucker for a father/daughter relationship and Billy and Bella have one of the realest ones around. They are essentially becoming reacquainted with one another but their love is still there with Billy being protective of Bella spending time with Edward and Bella being distraught about hurting her dad’s feelings when she left towards the end.
The Cullens and Ensemble Cast
Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Nikki Reed, Gil Birmingham, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene, Justin Chon, Michael Welch, Anna Kendrick, Christian Serratos, Jackson Rathbone, Rachelle Lefevre, Cam Gigandet, and Edi Gathegi made up the ensemble cast in the first film and were vital parts of this great looking cast. Everyone’s introductions slayed.
The Book Cover Scene
It started in “Twilight” with Catherine Hardwicke’s direction and deciding to go for recreating the book cover during a scene in the movie. The other films followed suit and it makes for a nice Easter egg for fans to spot them out.
Edward and Bella Falling In Love
There would be no “Twilight” without Edward and Bella so I would be remiss to not mention watching the pair fall in love. The awkwardness of their conversation in Biology class, the lion falling in love with the lamb in the woods, seeing Forks from the treetops, and dancing in the gazebo at prom. It’s all so romantic.
The End Credits
Radiohead’s “15 Step” set the scene for Victoria’s (Rachelle Lefevre) revenge and the montage that followed featured the cast is one of my favorite end credit sequences. It’s so well done.
