13 Horror Movie Sequels That Don’t Suck [Glamberween]

The Horror movie sequel can be a blessing or a curse. On one hand, it can be a great follow-up to continue a story introduced in an initial film that may have ended on a cliffhanger. It can also be a way to extend the concept bringing it into franchise territory where the Horror story can live on for future generations.

On the downside, sometimes sequels can be terrible. They disregard the original storyline and flip it in a way that doesn’t tie into the source material. Legacy characters don’t return or aren’t even mentioned if it’s that kind of sequel. And often they’re terrible because a sequel wasn’t needed in the first place, but there are a few sequels in the Horror genre that I actually did enjoy and prefer over the original films.

Here are 13 Horror movie sequels that I think were just as good as the original you can stream for this Glamberween. (*Note: These films were available on streamers at the time of this post.)

“Child’s Play 2” (1990)
The red-headed killer doll returned in the sequel to torment Andy Barclay once again and it was great to see Alex Vincent back as a bit older Andy and Brad Dourif voicing Chucky. This sequel was needed because viewers needed to know what happened to Andy. Adding Christine Elise’s Kyle was a character Chucky fans didn’t know we needed and that Good Guy warehouse sequence lives in my mind rent-free. Watch on: Peacock

“Final Destination 2” (2003)
Death does not like loose ends and the design will work itself out to wrap things up. While the concept of “Final Destination” usually takes a bulk of the characters one managed to cheat death long enough to show up in the sequel. Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) returned to help out another group of people who narrowly escaped death because of a premonition from Kimberly (A.J. Cook). I loved how this sequel tied into the first “Final Destination” and the “180” Easter eggs. Watch on: Max

“Hostel: Part II” (2007)
I feel this high-key could happen. Travelers get lured into an underworld of torture and murder with the highest bidder taking on the task. “Hostel” was amazing and I loved all the twists and turns in that one, but “Hostel: Part II” held its own taking the concept and expanding on it a bit further showing the process of bidding and contracts along with showing us what happened to Paxton (Jay Hernandez). Na zdrowie! Watch on: Plex, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel

“Insidious: Chapter 2” (2013)
“Don’t you dare” tell me this sequel wasn’t good. The same actors returned to reprise their characters with a new evil lurking over the Lambert family. This time Josh (Patrick Wilson) is possessed and trapped in the Further and made for a very entertaining villain. Watch on: Max

“Jeepers Creepers 2” (2003)
I’m sorry but “Jeepers Creepers 2” is way better than the first film. The Creeper is back to eat for 23 days and this time it has its eyes set on a group of high school basketball players, cheerleaders, and their coaches. The Creeper goes to extreme measures to trap them then proceeds to single out exactly who it has a taste for. It’s great! Watch on: Freevee, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Tubi

“Orphan First Kill” (2022)
Now this one gets tricky. It’s a sequel, but it’s a prequel showing the first family Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) swindled and how she got to America. I think Esther is one of the funniest Horror characters. I LOVED her in “Orphan” and was equally amused by her in this next installment. Watch on: MGM+, Paramount+, Prime Video

“Saw II” (2005)
My favorite film out of the entire “Saw” franchise is “Saw II.” John Kramer aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is still alive and has a new game with an assortment of people in a dilapidated home filled with traps. I like this style of “Saw” films that have multiple layers to how people are supposed to escape the traps. The twist in the first “Saw” was amazing because viewers didn’t know what to expect, but this twist was equally unexpected and I enjoyed how it tied into the original. Watch on: Hulu, Peacock, Prime Video, Starz, Tubi

“Scream 2” (1997)
Wes Craven is one of the kings of Horror and matched with Kevin Williamson writing the “Scream” movies you can’t go wrong. The best thing about the “Scream” movies is how they make fun of Horror movies and lean into the cliches and troupes of the genre. Moving into a sequel, “Scream 2” followed sequel rules laid out by Randy (Jamie Kennedy) as Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) defended her final girl status once more. Watch on: Max

“The Collection” (2012)
In “The Collector” viewers are introduced to a killer that simply collects humans. In “The Collection,” Arkin (Josh Stewart), a man who managed to survive the events of the first film escapes The Collector, but is dragged back into the mayhem to save a new victim. Both films don’t hold back when it comes to gore, but for some reason “The Collection” had a bigger impression on me. Watch on: Plex, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Tubi

“The Grudge 2” (2006)
What happened to Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) following the events of “The Grudge?” Well, the sequel lets you know real quick then introduces a new set of characters who insist on going into that house. I do prefer the first “The Grudge,” but the second one had some good moments and I like how it tied into the third installment. I like it when the stories blend. Watch on: Hulu, Peacock, Tubi

“The Hills Have Eyes 2” (2007)
New cast. Same hills. This is a sequel that I didn’t mind not tying into the original although it would have been interesting to know what happened to the survivors. A group of National Guard trainees are victims of mutants on the hills being taken out one by one as the survivors try to make their way out. Watch on: Starz

“The Purge: Anarchy” (2014)
I always found the concept of “The Purge” to be terrifying. As a society, I don’t think we’re too far from this actually happening especially if certain people get leadership roles in our government. In this sequel, it’s Purge Night yet again but it shows a variety of experiences until they all blend. Someone is out purging, a couple has car trouble and is stuck outside, and a mother and daughter are trying to survive the night. Watch on: Max, Peacock

“The Ring 2” (2005)
Sequels always work for me if the original cast is somehow incorporated into the follow-up film. Rachel (Naomi Watts) and Aidan (David Dorfman) have moved to a small rural town but Samara (Kelly Stables) is still lurking and possesses Aidan showing how powerful she truly can be. Watch on: Showtime Anytime
