It’s safe to say Mike Flanagan is the horror king of Netflix. In 2017 his film “Gerald’s Game” premiered on the streaming service, but when his horror masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House dropped in 2018 folks really started to narrow in on the filmmaker. Flanagan’s other work includes “Doctor Sleep,” Hush,” and “Oculus,” but his Netflix projects (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club) remain top-tier.
This October Mike Flanagan is bringing more terror with some help from a famed writer and poet. The Fall of the House of Usher is a new mini-series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The series follows ruthless siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell) who “have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power.” Tragedy consumes the family as “past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.
Many familiar faces of the Mike Flanagan universe appear in the series with some newbies. Carla Gugino, Ruth Codd, Mark Hamill, T’Nia Miller, Sauriyan Sapkota, Zach Gilford, Annabeth Gish, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, Matt Biedel, Daniel Jun, Rahul Kohli, Paola Núñez Henry Thomas, Kyliegh Curran, Nicholas Lea, Carl Lumbly, Aya Furukawa, and Igby Rigney make up the cast.
All of Mike Flanagan’s Netflix shows have left me terrified, which is hard to do as a horror lover, and emotionally shattered. Flanagan really knows how to effortlessly combine the two components of heart and horror. I can’t wait for this show!
The Fall of the House of Usher premieres on Netflix on Thursday, October 12.
