The world has officially been colored pink with “Barbie” becoming the biggest movie in the world currently bringing in $800M globally at the box office. The Greta Gerwig (“Little Women,” “Lady Bird”) directed film, co-written alongside Noah Baumbach (“White Noise,” “Marriage Story”) has gotten rave reviews since its July 21 premiere date making “Barbie” the biggest opening for a female director to date.

Starring Margot Robbie as the beloved pop culture icon Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie’s faithful counterpart Ken, “Barbie” follows the stereotypical Barbie (Robbie) going through an existential crisis and traveling to the real world for answers which lie in a teen girl named Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) and Sasha’s mother and Mattel worker Gloria (America Ferrera).

Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, Dua Lipa, Rita Arya, Nicola Coughlan, and Ana Cruz Kayne make up the ensemble cast playing Barbies with Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, and John Cena playing Kens. Helen Mirren voices narration in the movie and Emerald Fennell, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, and Rhea Perlman play Midge, Allan, Mattel’s CEO, and Ruth respectively.

Nostalgia in “Barbie” was slim as a bigger message of womanhood and feminism played a larger role in the movie. The production and costume departments of the film understood the assignment and flawlessly brought Barbieland to life. I know the movie centered around Barbie, but Ken REALLY stood out as a performance to watch. Read my full review of “Barbie” via Popternative.com HERE.
