If you know the name Marc Rebillet then you are fully aware of the spectacular and unique artist that he is. Personally, I had to get familiar with the 34-year-old musician whose rise from YouTube fame into a global megastar captives millions whenever he graces the stage or a computer screen.
Using loop stations, a keyboard, and uncanny vocals, Marc Rebillet’s unparalleled music is often created through YouTube videos and Twitch live streams where he essentially makes music with the help of his viewers right from his apartment. To date, Marc has released three studio albums (Marc Rebillet, Europe, and Loop Daddy III) and two extended play records (Loop Daddy and Loop Daddy II).
James Gallagher makes his feature film directorial debut with “Songs About Fucking,” which Gallagher also penned and centers on Marc Rebillet’s sold-old Third Dose Tour in the fall of 2021 and everything in between. The music documentary film had its world premiere screening on June 10 in New York City as part of the 2023 Tribeca Festival. Glambergirlblog got access to a screening of the film that took viewers on a front-seat, cross-country, unorthodox odyssey into Marc’s touring process, how he came up with some of his most iconic tracks and showed an intimate look at Marc’s personal life.
“Songs About Fucking” opens with home footage of Marc showcasing that his artistic prowess was instilled in him from a young age. Throughout the doc, viewers get an up-close look at his creative process and how well thought out the innovation of his tours and music style are. The robe-clad “loop daddy” is infamous for the originality of his live shows and streamings in that it’s much like theater and you never know what you’re going to get. His improvised funk and hip-hop electronic music is geared specifically towards his audience based on a subject matter they want to hear created. In the doc Marc breaks down some of his most popular tracks, one in particular is thanks to “legend” Marsha and how she inspired “Work That Ass For Daddy.”
Like many documentaries that center around an artist, a peek into their personal lives is shown. One touching moment in the doc was Marc talking about his father and the impact he had on him and his life. A vehicle incident forcing Marc to slow down was also a sincere moment that also slowed down the doc in a great way. The 99-minute joy ride felt like you were on tour and directly on stage with Marc during his sets so those earnest moments to just take it Marc’s success and reflect on the impact he has on the music industry were appreciated.
Filmmaker James Gallagher did a wonderful job creating a feel to his project that felt vintage; reminiscent of the genre Marc’s music fits into while creating a lively story that had me Shazaming while watching intrigued to hear more of Marc’s sound. “Songs About Fucking” is rambunctious as much as it is enlightening to see how Marc creates. If you were a Marc Rebillet fan before you’ll enjoy getting to know more about your favorite artist and if you’re a novice you’ll have Marc’s music on a loop as it makes you dance and inspires you at the same time.
The last day you can catch “Songs About Fucking” during the Tribeca Festival is Friday, June 16 at Village East by Angelika.
