It’s difficult to put a unique spin on the murder mystery genre. You have someone who is killed and then another person tries to solve the crime, but what the Apple TV+ series The Afterparty does well is taking the murder mystery concept and combining it with a variety of film genres told through different perspectives of the same event.
Created by Christopher Miller, season 1 followed a high school reunion after-party turned crime scene when a classmate ends up dead with Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) on the case. I don’t want to spoil too much, but the first season was absolutely hilarious and Dave Franco‘s character Xavier delivered a memorable performance. (Do yourself a favor and search for music from Xavier.) The second season will have Haddish, Sam Richardson and Zoë Chao returning for the next installment.
A cast so stacked it needed 3 layers.

In season two, “a wedding is ruined when the groom is murdered and every guest is a suspect.” Elizabeth Perkins, Zach Woods, Paul Walter Hauser, Poppy Liu, Anna Konkle, Jack Whitehall, Vivian Wu, John Cho and Ken Jeong join the cast with new film genres introduced. The 10-episode second season will premiere in July with two episodes followed by a weekly rollout through September 6.
The Afterparty season 2 premieres Wednesday, July 12 on Apple TV+.
