When I think about classic Disney animated films “The Little Mermaid” is without a doubt in my top five. I must admit I had my apprehensions about the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” all the recent Disney live-action adaptations to be exact, but they have been surprisingly good. Now that we’ve finally gotten the official trailer for the upcoming “The Little Mermaid” I’m glad to say it looks better than what I imagined.
The story of the live-action film remains similar to the 1989 animated version. It tells “the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy,” reads the official synopsis from Disney.
Directed by Rob Marshall, Halle Bailey stars as the mermaid princess Ariel with Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, all of which are featured in the official trailer. Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, and Jacob Tremblay also play pivotal roles in the film and can be heard in the trailer as Sebastian, Scuttle, and Flounder respectively. I didn’t like how they looked in the trailer, especially Sebastian and Flounder, so hopefully, they’ll look better in the full context.
Halle sounds amazing in “Part of Your World” which is featured in the trailer and we’ll get to hear more of the soundtrack a week before the film’s release. Music from Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman with new lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda will be on “The Little Mermaid” soundtrack available now to Pre-Save, Pre-Add, or Pre-Order and released on May 19, 2023.
“The Little Mermaid” comes to theaters on May 26, 2023.
