There’s a frequent troupe in horror films that Black people are usually killed off first, but who dies first if the entire plot centers around Black people? That’s the concept of “The Blackening.”
Back in 2019, Glambergirlblog wrote about the hilarious short from Comedy Central Originals titled “The Blackening.” The short followed a group of Black friends who went camping and became the target of a crazed killer who was willing to let the rest go if they sacrificed who they deemed was the blackest. Hilarity ensues as the group begins to speculate on their blackness. The upcoming feature film of the same name will flesh out the concept.
Directed by Tim Story with a screenplay by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins, “The Blackening” follows seven Black friends who head to a cabin in the woods to celebrate Juneteenth and are forced to play a deadly game by a masked killer. Who will survive? “The Blackening” stars Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji.
“The Blackening” comes to theaters on June 16, 2023.
